Flight 1 (16 notes)

Red
2002 Domaine Truchot-Martin Clos de la Roche France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
92 points
Tasted double blind. Big aromatics including lots of barnyard charm alongside red cherry and dried herbs. Lean red cherry and strawberry flavors come through on palate with thyme and sage along with some baking spice in background. Flavors expand on finish. You rarely see this wine around. Thanks, Katsu!
Red
2006 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Monprivato Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Perhaps an off bottle? Lean and angular without much fruit or spice today.
Red
1997 Pahlmeyer Merlot USA, California, Napa Valley
80 points
Tasted double blind. Aromas of overripe black fruit to start along with plenty of prominent oak spice. Jammy flavors with a flabby finish. Probably more than half the group liked this wine, so it's a good wine if you like big, simple wine that's all fruit.
Red
1997 Arrowood Merlot Réserve Spéciale USA, California, Sonoma County
85 points
Tasted double blind. Starts with big, black fruit aromas, slightly more lean and textured on the palate. Short finish is a bit dry. Slightly past its peak.
Red
1998 Dalla Valle Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
90 points
Tasted double blind. Mature black currant and cassis aromas with some lead pencil elements that gave it a Bordeaux character. Modest degree of good barnyard comes through on both nose and palate. Same fruit on palate with modest spice increasing towards the wine's moderate finish.
Red
2004 Domaine Bertheau (Pierre et François) Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
79 points
Tasted double blind. Open approximately an hour. Green aromas dominate to start. Lean red fruit alongside that same green character with a slightly bitter finish. I'm told this was much more pleasant when initially opened.
Red
2000 Château Prieuré-Lichine France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
86 points
Tasted double blind. Ripe plum and black plum aromas on nose. Palate was much more structured with somewhat coarse tannins and sharp acidity well ahead of the black fruit. Seemed disjointed.
Red
2006 Clos Erasmus Priorat Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
93 points
Tasted double blind. Black cherry and boysenberry aromas with some licorice and perfumed character. Same fruit profile on palate that's ripe but well balanced. Good acidity and silky tannins help give very good textures and elegance. Still has room to improve from here. Thanks, Jeff.
White
2007 Domaine Dujac Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Monts-Luisants Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru
90 points
Tasted double blind. Aromas of lemon and lemon oil. Same citrus flavors on palate that transition to some apple on the finish. Lots of acidity providing lift and energy towards fairly long finish.
Red
2002 Beaux Frères Pinot Noir Beaux Frères Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Ribbon Ridge
91 points
Tasted double blind. Aromas of black cherry with attractive baking spice. Maturing black cherry and red cherry flavors on palate with very nice balance. Drinking very well now.
Red
2000 La Spinetta (Rivetti) Barbaresco Vürsù Vigneto Valeirano Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
90 points
I brought this to today's double blind tasting, and bottom line is that everybody liked it but it really was tough to identify as Nebbiolo. Powerful, sweet black cherry flavors and aromas with some clove and allspice. Fruit is quite fresh, finish a bit short on acidity.

Red
1995 Domaine l'Aiguelière Coteaux du Languedoc Montpeyroux Côte Dorée France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Coteaux du Languedoc Montpeyroux
90 points
Tasted double blind. Dark black fruit on both nose and power, showing lots of power in both. Fruit is just barely starting to age but I didn't really get much complementary spice or emerging complexity here.
Red
2008 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
92 points
Tasted double blind. Easily identifiable as Northern Rhone based on great black pepper aromas. Reasonable and elegant black cherry comes through on both nose and palate with good balance and textures. Very fresh and enjoyable already today, this probably isn't a vintage to stash the Chave Hermitage in the back of the cellar.
Red
2000 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Landonne France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
Tasted double blind. Dense, black and not particularly accessible aromas. Similar black fruit on palate with just the most faint hints of black pepper. Massively tannic also made this tough to appreciate today. I was completely surprised to see this is a Guigal "La La" when unveiled. If representative, I would imagine this will take another decade to mature.
Red
1995 Louis Jadot Corton France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
85 points
Tasted double blind. Moderate black fruit on nose. Palate is far more dominated by lots of acidity and fairly robust tannins, I'm not sure where or when this wine will emerge as something more balanced or interesting.
Red
2003 Maison Champy Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
89 points
Tasted double blind. Lean black cherry and black berry aromas with a hint of Gevrey animale character. Same fruit on palate, coming across as quite balanced. Tasted blind, nobody thought this was from 2003, instead mostly thinking it from 2006 or 2007. Surprisingly good acidity and subtlety for the vintages. This showed much better than another bottle tasted blind just a few weeks ago.
