Introduction

Our tasting group came together to have a taste of the much hyped, but also somewhat contradictory vintage of red Burgundy.

Flight 1 - Gevrey Villages (3 notes)

Red
2009 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin Vieille Vigne France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
91 points
A refined and airy wine with luxurious fruit and lovely freshness. A great village wine.
Red
2009 Domaine Denis Bachelet Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
92 points
This is so very primary. Needs a lot of time in the glass, but eventually finds a lovely balance. Very complex for a village wine with that telltale black minerality and powerful fruit. Just a fabulous village wine.
Red
2009 Domaine Louis Boillot et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
90 points
A refined wine with nice complexity and a long aftertaste. A pity I didn't have enough time with this wine to see how it would develop over time. Very nice, but not necessarily as interesting as the 2008 of this wine.

Flight 2 - Other Villages (3 notes)

Red
2009 Domaine Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle-Musigny France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny
90 points
Some delightful fruit and a very nice structure, but clearly needs time in the cellar to develop complexity. Excellent potential.
Red
2009 Domaine Bruno Clavelier Vosne-Romanée La Combe Brûlée Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée
92 points
Immediately open with nice complexity. Minerality and also some barnyard. Excellent balance. Fine concentration and mouthfeel. Develops a very nice terroir impression with some time in the glass.
Red
2009 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits St. Georges Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges
89 points
Suprisingly acidic for the vintage. Very nice fruit and a good structure. Perhaps not as impressive as the other village wines in this tasting, though.

Flight 3 - 1er Crus (4 notes)

Red
2009 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques Vieille Vigne France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
95 points
A very deep and complex nose. In the mouth also really complex with just wonderful balance and great depth. Lovely fruit, earth, minerality. Concentrated and amazingly refined mouthfeel. The aromatics are really hooking. Insanely good for a young Burgundy.

Red
2009 Domaine Louis Boillot et Fils Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
92 points
Bright fresh fruit with a fine depth. Very stylish and long. A wine of finesse that wasn't perhaps as expressive tonight as the other wines it was drank together with.
Red
2009 Domaine Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
93 points
Powerful fresh fruit with many layers to it. Tightly bound and probably needs extended cellar time to deliver its true potential. This is an impressive whole, like a beautiful building, but the door just hasn't been found yet. Great potential. For the patient.
Red
2009 Domaine Bruno Clavelier Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Brûlées Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
94 points
An open and lovely nose. Finely aromatic and concentrated in the mouth. A wonderful mouthfeel. Complex and persistent. Really fine fruit with lovely terroir impression. Great stuff.

Closing

In the end I was very impressed with these wines. There was absolutely nothing in terms of over-ripeness or softness in the lineup. Of course the producers were hand-picked out of those I assumed should have been able to avoid the extremities of the vintage. All wines were really delicious and some even among the best young Burgundies I've ever had. A great night.
