Double Blind Mini Offline

John's House

Tasted March 30, 2012 by rocknroller with 222 views

Introduction

The theme was to do a double blind tasting, minimum price of $60 paid. Drink the first round blind and make our determinations, and then drink second pours after revealing the wines. This is always a lot of fun in a small group format where you get two nice pours of each wine. What a way to spend a lazy Friday: good friends, some good food, and some really great wines.

Flight 1 - Double Blind Wines (4 notes)

(with the obvious exception of our own wines which were single blind)

Red
2008 Antica Terra Pinot Noir Botanica USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Medium red color. Drank 2 glasses over 2 hours, first glass double blind and second glass after revealed. Nailed this as Oregon Pinot. Nose is wonderful, brightly floral, rose hips, dusty, damp earth, raspberry, spice, sous bois, starwberry. The palate is perfectly balanced, consistent with nose, light and elegant, delightfully feminine in style, nice acid, soft and long, This just kept getting better in the glass. Who knows where this might have gone if we had more! My #2 WOTN.
Red
2004 L'Aventure Estate Cuvée USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles

Dark purple/black color. Opened night before and immediately recorked, decanted for one hour prior. Drank 2 glasses over 2+hrs. First glass was blind, but there was no doubt in my mind this was my wine. Stunning wine. Nose immediately grabs you, beautiful fruits of blueberry, creme de cassis, mulberry, blackberry, lots of floral elements, forest floor, vanilla. The palate has great structure, full bodied, glides over the mouth, complex and elegant, palate notes are consistent with the nose, adds in leather, spice, extremely long 120+ second finish. Color just hangs on the glass. Absolutely fantastic. WOW, 96+pts. Unanimous group WOTN.

Red
2001 Anderson's Conn Valley Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Reserve USA, California, Napa Valley

Dark red to very dark red color. Drank 2 glasses over 2+ hours, first glass double blind, second glass after revealed. Nose smacks of Bordeaux, very Margaux like. Cassis, mulberry, dry forest floor, violets. The palate is medium bodied, , lighter, more red fruits mix in on the palate with the cassis, a bit acidic, saddle leather, earth, mineral, oak and cedar on the finish. I pegged this as Left Bank Bordeaux or Bordeaux blend, very old world style, quite feminine. Wasn't too far off. Very good, just a little woody on the finish.
Red
2007 Quivet Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Kenefick Ranch USA, California, Napa Valley
90 points
Very dark red -purple color. Decanted for around 2 hours total before serving. Drank 1+ glasses over 2 hours. First glass was douible blind, additional pour after revealed. Clearly Napa Cab. Nose has dry herbs, spice, anise, blackberry, herbal- not in a good way. lots of alcohol. The palate is also quite hot (15.2% alcohol), spicy, oaky, medium full body, blackberry. This calmed down after after an hour, but still was too hot and oaky for my palate. Pass.

Flight 2 - Dessert Wine (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
2006 King Estate Pinot Gris Vin Glacé USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
93 points
Consistent with previous notes. Great way to wrap the day.

Closing

Clear cut unanimous WOTN was the 2004 L'Aventure Estate Cuvee, which no one pegged as a syrah blend (S60%, CS29%, PV11%).
