Introduction
The International Newcomers' Club of Madrid holds monthly "wine and tapas" gatherings at members' houses. These evenings are mainly potluck/BYOB parties, rather than formal wine tastings. People "present" their wines (two at a time) by telling a story, sharing their prior tasting impressions, or simply reading the back label. No one bothers to exchange or even rinse glasses, or take notes.
However, by the end of the night this time, several people requested info on the wines that were presented. I was not able to document all of them, as I was only able to work from memory. I only had a quick sip of some, and didn't even get to try others, so I've left numeric ratings off of all the "reviews" I've posted for this date.

2010 El Regajal Selección Especial
Spain, Madrid, Vinos de Madrid
This was the first wine I presented at the Wine and Tapas event. From one of the closest vineyards to the city of Madrid, this strong tempranillo blend (15.5%) is still complex and pleasurable, even though it's not nearly ready to drink. 13 months in oak.

2006 Marqués de Griñón Vinos de Madrid El Rincón
Spain, Madrid, Vinos de Madrid
I presented this wine that Dave brought in the second tasting round. Another product of Madrid province, from Aldea del Fresno about 50 km southwest of the city, El Rincon is a Syrah/Grenache blend from lower-altitude vines.
For several people, this was the wine of the night. It was very showy after only 30 minutes of airing, with a rich, round, integrated Syrah-driven flavor.

2009 Bodegas San Alejandro Garnacha Calatayud Las Rocas Viñas Viejas
Spain, Aragón, Calatayud
Chris presented this old vine Granache from a little-known wine-growing region (Calatayud) in Aragon that Robert Parker particularly loves. Very big (15.5%) and a little tough at first, but mellows fairly quickly in the glass. It would take more time than we had to judge its potential, but I definitely want to try another bottle at a more leisurely pace.

2006 Baron de Ley Rioja Reserva
Spain, La Rioja, Rioja
Daniela presented this classic Rioja Reserva in the next-to-the-last flight. 20 months in new oak, followed by two years in bottle produce a smooth, vanilla accented red.

2006 Bodegas Nueva Valverde Vinos de Madrid Tejoneras Alta Selección
Spain, Madrid, Vinos de Madrid
Our third Madrid wine (completely by chance) presented in the final flight of wines at the tasting. A blend of grenache with cabernet, syrah, tempranillo and even merlot from Villa del Prado, near Mentrida. More traditionally styled than many of the new wave of wines from Madrid, Tejoneras has a medium body and a very dry finish.
