Flight 1 (13 notes)

Red
2009 Cecile Tremblay Bourgogne La Fontaine France, Burgundy, Bourgogne
87 points
Bright Luden's cherry on the nose, a bit rustic (probably due to youth), some tannic grip, good finish. Not a lot of complexity here.
Red
2009 Domaine David Clark Bourgogne Au Pelson France, Burgundy, Bourgogne
85 points
Interesting spiced cherries on the nose, but a let down in the mouth. Light bodied and thin, mediocre finish.
Red
2009 Domaine Collotte Marsannay Le Clos de Jeu France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Marsannay
91 points
Impressive for an inexpensive Burgundy! Nose of dark cherries with a bit of a medicinal hint, rich fruit on the palate with decent structure, and a long finish that kept me coming back for more. This is a real Burgundy bargain!
Red
2009 Jean Foillard Morgon Côte du Py France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon
92 points
Had this one blind and was surprised at how good it was, especially when I found out it was a Beaujolais. The nose was earthy and complex with a depth I would not have expected. Soft and round in the mouth with beautiful fruit, and a long finish. Not sure if this is still available, but I'll be looking.
Red
2009 Alain Gras Auxey-Duresses Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Auxey-Duresses
91 points
Aromas of cedar and earth with a bit of menthol, well balanced, integrated tannins. Overall a very nice wine.
Red
2009 Comte Armand Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru Rouge France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru
90 points
Had this against the Alain Gras. This was supposed to be the better wine, but I thought the Alain beat it out by a small margin. Good raspberry and cherry fruit in the mouth with well balanced acids, good structure and a long finish. The place where it fell down a bit for me was the restrained nose. Maybe it will open up over time but for now its a touch on the reserved side.
Red
2009 Faiveley Volnay 1er Cru Les Fremiets France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
92 points
Complex, deep notes of earth and barnyard, rich mouthfeel, balanced acids, good structure and a long finish. What's not to like!
Red
2009 Benjamin Leroux Volnay 1er Cru Les Mitans France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

This was in the same flight as the Faiveley Volnay Femiets and this one just inched past it's opponent. It was very similar in many ways, but had a bit more depth and structure. Like the Faiveley, the nose was complex with notes of earth and barnyard, rich gorgeous fruit in the mouth, and with a long finish to wrap up the show.

2009 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
91 points
Complex with floral notes and a bit of cardamom on the nose, but somewhat reserved. This is a big, strutured wine and well balanced, with a long finish. I was a little put off by the restrained nose and by a slight sour note on the finish. A good wine all in all, but with its bloodlines, I expected more.
Red
2009 Benjamin Leroux Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Aux Thorey France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
93 points
A gorgeous wine that is well built and delivers. Nose of earth and barnyard with a slightly spicy edge to it that gives it added interest and complexity. This wine is big and structured, yet well balanced. A long lingering finish tops it off.
Red
2009 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Corton-Bressandes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
94 points
Rated as the top wine by myself and many others at this tasting. Rich and full bodied, a complex nose with primary notes of cherries and earth, perfect balance and a mouthfull of beautiful fruit on the palate. This is a big wine that is enjoyable to drink now, but promises much more in the years to come.

Had this as a blind "cellar raid" wine at the tasting. Blew me away. Nearly everyone was convinced this was an aged Burgundy. Nose of raspberry, cherries and earth, with subtle tertiary notes that gave it a surprising complexity. Well structured, good fruit, long finish. What a delight!

1994 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Fay USA, California, Napa Valley

Another blind "cellar raid" wine for the night. Excellent aged cabernet with some unusual notes that made some of us wonder what it was. Dark fruits, herbal, round and powerful. An excellent wine that is aging well.
