Burgundy 2012 Day 3: Lunch at Restaurant l'Alambic

Nuits St-Georges, Burgundy

Introduction

This was one lunch I did not enjoy much. The wines, chosen by Sasha from a decent list and served blind, were pretty nice, with the Rully being quite a surprise. The food, however, was rather ho-hum and the service unfortunately dead-slow. Not the best thing for a gang of cold, hungry visitors.

Flight 1 (2 notes)

White
2009 Dureuil-Janthial Rully 1er Cru Les Margotés Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte Chalonnaise, Rully 1er Cru

A good 2009 white - this was a great example of what Rully can produce. It had a very pretty nose, with honeysuckle and white flower scents drifting across notes of cream, lemons and ripe white fruit, with a small touch of smoky minerality bringing up the rear. I thought the palate was extremely well-balanced indeed for a 2009. It certainly had a creamy-textured richness and some of the ripe, forward fruit of the vintage, with shades of apricots and sweet lemons petering out into a grippy, slightly minerally finish. But this was wed to a decent acidity that kept it very so drinkable. A bit of heat distracts ever-so-slightly on the backpalate, but that aside, this was a good wine.
Red
2007 Mongeard-Mugneret Nuits St. Georges Les Plateaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges

A decent enough village going for a reasonable price on the restaurant list. It started of really well, with expressive aromas of meat and herbs, dashes of spice, then dark cherries, blackberries and a whiff of violets - a really complex, lovely nose. Unfortunately, the palate was not quite up to step. It attacked with lots of bright, almost aggressive acidity running through ripe notes of dark cherry with just hint of minerality at the sides. Pretty nice flavours, but rather weaker and less convincing than the nose would have led one to expect. It had a very short finish, just stopping short with a little burst of cherries on the midpalate. Overall, a decent wine, nothing more. Pity. I liked certain things here quite a bit, but it was very incomplete.
