Introduction

My wife and I attended a wine seminar with Justin Baldwin of Justin winery. We tasted some of his 2010s and 2011s in the lineup. I left very impressed with the reds, and less so with the whites. But overall a wonderful night.

Flight 1 (6 notes)

White
2010 Justin Vineyards & Winery Sauvignon Blanc USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles

First wine of the lineup. Citrus lemon, some grapefruit and pineapple warm notes and a little other tropical. Almost a tinned variety of greenness. Noticeable alcohol and some diminishing acidity. A little too hot for my taste.
White
2011 Justin Vineyards & Winery Chardonnay USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
87 points
Some mild french oak influence, with sub-kissed fruit, honeysuckle, light corn and toast and a little chalky minerality. Slightly hot. Subtle harvest notes. Has some class, subtlety and body, but lacks sufficient acidity and balance, in my opinion. Only good. Not great.
Red
2010 Justin Vineyards & Winery Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
88 points
Now we are talking. Justin knows their reds. Blackberry and black currant bright youthful fruit with a slight (and I must say pleasing) jam. American oak influence- some oak sweetness. Natural tannins, chalk and some vanilla. Wild berry? Great effort.
Red
2009 Justin Vineyards & Winery Justification USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
90 points
Beautiful cab franc blend. Subtle and classic. Soft fruit notes with a little refinement, some chalk, blueberry and lavender, some mint, and a little greenness. Medium plus body with a soft, elegant finish.
Red
2010 Justin Vineyards & Winery Isosceles USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
93 points
Complex, serious wine. Structured fruit with redcurrant, rhubarb and cherry notes, herbs of brush and thyme, perfume and violet, youthful new french oak influence and a noticeable streak of charcoal and mesquite. I bet that those notes would do nicely with a nice roast. Medium plus acidity, strong but integrated alcohol and a full body. Needs time but enjoyable now.

Red - Fortified
2009 Justin Vineyards & Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Obtuse USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
Interesting port-like dessert wine made with cab sauvignon grapes. Raspberry and pomegranate strong streak, but with some subtlety underneath. This wine is really hard to rate, because it is definitely unique. Therefore, I won´t try.
