Few Bordeaux with Christian

Tasted December 12, 2012 by Jojala with 348 views

Introduction

Christian was on his long overdue visit in Helsinki and I promised a tasting with few good wines. Grand Puy-Lacoste and Smith Haut Lafitte I had last time in 2008 and liked them very much back then. Leoville Poyferre from vintage 2008 I never had before. Wines double decanted some 5-6h before drinking.

As warming up for the reds. Nobody concentrated on this very much... I should have offered cava :) It is deeped than your avarage champagne, darker "colors" and pinot character nicely on the fore.

Sweeter nose compared to SHL and much more tamed, cherry. But what a palate... Impeccable balance, pure velvet, not a blockbuster, will not take heavy food. Wall of tannins is a wrong description, but there is certainly a wave of velvet meeting at the mid-palate and it is a delight. Cassis. At first the wine seemed short compared to the two others, but extended time in glass brought length. The tannins are made of silk, ripe and dense. Will be nice to see how this develops. Much more developed than the Smith Haut Lafitte.

Nose: mature, full, a beauty. Intensive, almost aggressive nose but with a sense of control. Develops a sweeter toffee like / milk chocolate with time. Deep and thick. Perhaps the most impressive nose I remember. Nose with capital N. Full bodied, still strong tannins, a bit coarse but not in a bad way. Very young. Not great complexity but nicely at your face. Not ready. Hold.

Nose: marzipan, kirsch, banana - quite an interesting nose. Grainy structure on palate, somewhat hollow mid-palate but just a little. There is plenty of stuffing in this wine, yet nervous compared to GPL. This is great 2008, second to Latour only of those I have had.
