Introduction
A fine gang of friendly wine nerds got together at Brasserie au Miel in Tobe (Yokohama) and brought some good and interesting bottles of wine. The chef had prepared a nice set menu and everything was perfectly prepared for a successful event and wonderful evening.
Flight 1 - Welcome toast and salad (3 notes)
Leflaive came on too acidic and the yellow wine was an odd bird for many. Food was inspiring and had several interesting and well prepared components.
I'd never have guessed Leflaive nor the price range. There are much better white Burgs available for this kind of money. If I had any, I'd keep for quite some years and hope a lot...
Mouth: Insidiously light and elegant with pronounced minerality. Very well made wine that did well throughout the evening.
Will not buy, but enjoyed. Still a baby.
Flight 2 - End of salad, beginning of pork plate (3 notes)
I ate terribly slowly, trying to squeeze out some greatness from Leflaive only to find myself adoring the PF.
Cat's pee *light*, goose berries and black currant leaves tip-toe out of the glass.
In the mouth this is a rather light wine with extra flowers and elegance through a fine minerality.
The mineral notes lifts this wine from "average" in to the "good" bracket.

Still bashful on the nose, but it's in the mouth we found the action: Rich, long, elegant with finesse, restrained, minerality etc with a luxorious touch of oak. Superbly well made wine that really stood its ground from first sip until last.
Would gladly have this several more times...

Flight 3 - End of pig followed by a cheese plate (3 notes)
Blinded, I think I'd have voted Les Charmes as a Musar-without-oompf. The Minervois was the first empty bottle and as much as a positive surprise as it was stunning.
Grand nose of behind-of-horse and leather, mimicking a finer Musar (without the strong backbone).
In the mouth this is an elegant structure where you find things like zesty acids, molten tannins, bretty jewels and good body. This is quite delicious, but I'd choose two btls of Musar before one of this, any day of the week. Because this is quite similar to a good Musar at twice the price...
Did well with the food.
Nose on this one differs from the previous tasters' experiences: We had glue (Karlsons Klister), industrial rubber and petrochem á la Riesling before we found the coffee and small amount of darker fruits. In the mouth this is going "every places" with pointy acids, M- tannin, rich fruit and dark aromas. Kind of exciting and well made, but also an unusual wine if you look at the composition. Picassoesque stilleben or just a mistake? We couldn't say.
Would be thrilling to try it again in 3-5 years' time.
3 hrs later served at the tasting:
Grande! Elevated nose with underlined minerality, round fruit and raw wood.
In the mouth this is first of all rich, concentrated, structured and mineral in its expression. The full body is well supported by M+ acids and M+ tannins. Elegant harmony. Restrained beauty. Mid-palate is occupied by sunny fruits that still allow for the mineral tastes to intertwine. The finish sports the previously mentioned raw wood, fabulous fruit and bitter almonds.
Only btl, really looking forward to the magic they have wielded in my 2 btls of 2009.
QPR for this one beats anything from the "other part" of Burgundy.

Flight 4 - Choice between a glass of beer, dessert or a cup of coffee. (0 notes)
I ignored the dessert and finished wrapping up my head around the wines, not quite getting all the way with the Chilean PN...
Closing
IMHO: The best white was definitely the Pouilly-Fuissé and the best red was the Minervois wine. Food made us all happy and the service created a smooth evening. Great initiative! Already looking forward to the next event.
