Introduction

This twitter tasting event showcased how Touraine, fed by Centre-Loire’s limestone soils, has set the international standard for Sauvignon Blanc.

Flight 1 (5 notes)

2012 Jean François Mérieau Touraine Les Hexagonales France, Loire Valley, Touraine
89 points
(12.5%) 100% Sauvignon Blanc –Soft, fleshy sweet and spiced with peach (and like stone fruit) backed by perfumed, floral blossom notes coupled with mineral acidity that lasts throughout a refreshing finish. Dry, crisp and tasty. A veritable steal at $14 with a nice balance of mineral and fruit. Obviously I really enjoyed it...

2011 Le Rocher des Violettes Sauvignon France, Loire Valley, Touraine

(13%) 100% Sauvignon Blanc from Montlouis-sur-Loire appellation. Bright, lively, fresh with lemon and a firm, acidic backbone. Linear and laser focused with some lingering mineral spice on the finish.

2011 Domaine de la Garreliere Touraine Le Blanc France, Loire Valley, Touraine
90 points
(12.5%) Soft, soothing and medium bodied with nice texture and saline edges. This wine unfolds to show nuance and layers. Nice mineral (talc), nice spice, a touch of smoke amongst others before a great lingering finish that goes on for days. At $17 it is definitely punching its weight…

2011 Domaine de la Charmoise Sauvignon Blanc Touraine France, Loire Valley, Touraine

(12.5%) 100% Sauvignon Blanc – Tight mineral core with lemon, citrus edges. Crisp and dry with nice acidity and loads of white pepper spice that linger all the way through a clean, lasting, persistent finish. Plenty of structure here but perhaps a bit lean and short on fruit. While a nice wine there were others from this tasting I preferred at the same price point.

2011 Domaine Ricard Touraine Les Trois Chênes France, Loire Valley, Touraine
(13%) 100% Sauvignon Blanc – One of these kids is not like the other… Different texture, much heavier (thought maybe time on lees but later learn it spends 8 months aging in oak casks) with overripe peach and stone fruit flavors showing some nuttiness/oxidation around the edges. From there honey and floral notes emerge, along with balancing acidity, on a soft, lingering finish. This captures your attention for sure. That will be good news for some and not so much for others. Not what I was expecting from a Sauvignon Blanc but definitely unique which is worth extra points in my book…
