Introduction

Wanted to focus on Burgundy terroir a little so we opened a handful of 1ers from a vintage we expected to be showing well.

Flight 1 - Champagne to Start (1 note)

White - Sparkling
2003 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut France, Champagne
Bottle had just been shipped in that day, so probably not completely representative. Very enchanting aromatic start with lots of fresh apple and lemon curd as well as hints of berries and brioche. Palate also showed forward and ripe fruit but with good power and balance. There was some awkward structure and sharp elbows at the finish that I will attribute to its travel over the prior day or two. So putting that aside, this has great potential...no surprise since it's Krug, but a bit of a surprise given it is from 2003.

Flight 2 - 1999 Whites from Chassagne-Montrachet (3 notes)

White
1999 Jean Noel Gagnard Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Caillerets France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
92 points
Ripe fruit on nose and palate but with the crisp acidity and minerality to make it come across as lean and vibrant. Better with food than on its own.
White
1999 Domaine Bernard Morey et Fils Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Caillerets France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
90 points
Lots of ripe apple and pear aromas. Forward and opulent orchard fruit flavors as well with a nice touch of spice. Enough acidity to keep this exciting, although I expect this might have been better 2 or 3 years ago.
White
1999 Domaine Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Ruchottes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
94 points
Really sensational, this was the best bottle of this wine I've had in the past couple of years. Lush and rich fruit with very good concentration and density. Intriguing mint hints that are characteristic of Ramonet, with a subtle licorice hint as well. This is showing the potential I recall from when I tried this wine very young around 2003 or 2004.

Flight 3 - 1999 Volnay 1er (2 notes)

Red
1999 Maison Leroy Volnay 1er Cru Santenots France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
92 points
Served alongside Coche-Dury 1999 Volnay 1er. Red and black cherry aromas and flavors with very good concentration. Slight floral notes, but intensely spice-driven. Good length and power, perhaps not quite as nuanced or texturally exciting as the Coche.
Red
1999 Coche-Dury Volnay 1er Cru France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
93 points
Served alongside the Maison Leroy 1999 Volnay Santenots. This wine was all about bright red fruit, showcasing red cherry and strawberry. Lots of lean fruit well complemented by slightly sweet spice. Long, lean and very energetic. This wine should easily keep improving over the next decade.

The flight was served blind and most of slightly preferred this to the Leroy. Great flight.

Flight 4 - 1999 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er (2 notes)

So sad, both flawed. Time to quickly move on.

Red
1999 Louis Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques Domaine Louis Jadot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
flawed
Corked.
Red
1999 Hubert Lignier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
flawed
Stewed. Possibly heat damaged.

Flight 5 - 1999 Vosne-Romanee 1er (2 notes)

Red
1999 Nicolas Potel Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
89 points
Tasted single blind alongside Meo-Camuzet 1999 Brulees. This clearly showed attractive Vosne baking spice character with mostly black fruit that was reasonably dense and mature with good earthy elements as well as the firm nature I often associate with Malconsorts.
Red
1999 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Brûlées France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
92 points
Served single blind alongside Potel 1999 Malconsorts. This was open ~3 hours before serving, which certainly helped as it kept getting better in glass, even though it was more mature than i recall from when last tried a couple of years back. Very good spice with lots of red cherry and some sauteed mushroom hints.

Flight 6 - With Dessert (2 notes)

White - Sweet/Dessert
1967 Monimpex Tokaji Ausbruch Trockenbeerenauslese Aszú 5 Puttonyos Hungary, Tokaji
Here was a peculiar wine - a 5 Puttonyos Tokaji TBA. Super charming to start but fell off and faded quickly, losing appeal after a few minutes in glass. A metaphor for the Communism under which it was produced?
White - Sweet/Dessert
1999 Zind-Humbrecht Tokay Pinot Gris Clos Jebsal Sélection de Grains Nobles France, Alsace
Super concentrated apricot aromas and flavors. forward, powerful and very enjoyable. Perhaps just a bit simple, of course that might have driven by its being the 12th bottle of the evening.
