Flight 1 (2 notes)
White - Sparkling
1996 Salon Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut
95 points
Nose is fresh, lively and seemingly young with green apples and citrus. Palate is very young with loads of acid and crisp apple notes. Terrific stuffing and length. Seems this is still wound up and needs time to evolve. Excellent.
White - Sparkling
1996 Moët & Chandon Champagne Cuvée Dom Pérignon
90 points
Nose has some tired, musty apple and smoke notes. Round in the mouth with matured fruit and earth notes. Bubbles are subdued. Good but seemed tired compared to a '96 Salon tasted side by side. Could be a bad bottle as some were debating corkiness.
Flight 2 (3 notes)
White
2004 Henri Boillot Montrachet
94 points
Wow nose of matchstick, meyer lemon, honied apple and flowers. Palate has medium-to-full body, terrific acidity and freshness. Elegant across the palate into a nice long finish.
White
2007 Marcassin Chardonnay Marcassin Vineyard
96 points
Outstanding layered nose with apple, pear, honey, smoke and citrus. Palate is rich and leesy. Echoes the nose with pears, apples and smoke notes. Delicious and rich, but with very good supporting structure.
White
2006 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Blanc
In a very weird place. Nose is awkward with oxidized notes dominating white fruit. Palate has a waxy profile but seems tired. Likely shut down and not enjoyable tonight.
Flight 3 (2 notes)
White - Sweet/Dessert
1976 Château Climens
95 points
Golden color. Open and elegant nose. Sweet apricot and orange with botrytis and caramel. Palate is just wow. Complex flavors, sweet and yet very light on its feet. Long. Hard to believe this is pushing 40 years old. Much better than an d'Yquem tasted side by side.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1976 Château d'Yquem
89 points
Rose gold in color. Sweet blunt nose doesn't show much nuance or complexity. Palate has good richness and medium acidity, but echos the nose without nuance or complexity. Did not show well next to a '76 Clmens side by side.
Flight 4 (3 notes)
Red
1982 Château Cheval Blanc
97 points
Gorgeous full, layered nose has cedar, tobacco, aged red fruit, and herbs. Medium silky body with melted tannin. Long, lifted finish full of pencil shavings and herbs. Served blind - I was guessing at least 10 years younger. A real treat.
Red
1983 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Landonne
94 points
Gorgeous aromas with secondary notes at the forefront - mushroom, bacon, olive and red fruit. Palate is vibrant, well delineated with good length.
Red
1983 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único
An odd bottle of Unico. Fresh nose of rich, sweet red fruit, dill and vanilla. Palate also rich and ripe. Served double blind - tasted much younger with most acknowledging it was an atypical showing.
Flight 5 (3 notes)
Red
2007 Screaming Eagle Second Flight
93 points
Rich, young and seductive nose of black and red fruit, sweet toasty oak and spice. Palate is also rich but with incredible poise and polish. Balanced with a ton of stuffing.
Red
2005 Sine Qua Non Grenache The Naked Truth
96 points
Double blind but bottle shapes gives it away as SQN. Big, exotic and layered nose of red fruit and spice. Palate is chock full of red fruit and an array of spice and herb flavors. Good structure on the mid-palate provides freshness and length. Long spice-filled finish.
Red
2005 Clos Saint Jean Châteauneuf-du-Pape Deus-Ex Machina
92 points
Big, powerful nose of raspberry and herbs. Palate has big, rich and extracted red fruit. Oozing with herbs and blackberry jam. For all the size and richness, it remains fresh with no trace of heat.
