Jardiniere - San Francisco CA

Tasted March 12, 2014 by Burgundy Al with 576 views

Introduction

It's just before La Paulee and it's Roger Schagrin's birthday, so that means one thing...Burgundy. Lots of it.

Flight 1 (17 notes)

White - Sparkling
1990 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut France, Champagne
93 points
Very ripe and mature apple and pear aromas. tropical hints. Very long and powerful. This is an enormous wine with great mouth feel and textures.
White - Sparkling
1990 Henriot Champagne Cuvée des Enchanteleurs Brut France, Champagne
92 points
From magnum. Incredibly fresh apple with good lemon hints. Far better balance and energy than most 1990s today. Never would have thought 1990 if tasted blind.
White
2002 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
93 points
Popped and poured. Very linear start with plenty of orchard fruit aromas and flavors, seemingly lean. Picked up weight and density from middle to finish.
White
1991 Louis Carillon Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
91 points
An impressive performance for a 1991, this showed lots of reasonably fresh apple, moderate intensity, but overall very good balance.
White
2002 Jean Noel Gagnard Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
flawed
Magnum. Oxidized.

White
2008 Domaine de Montille Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
91 points
Nicely floral with very good orchard fruit that still shows a touch too much new oak. Drinking nicely now. Others liked this more than I did tonight.
White
1982 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
93 points
Ripe stone fruit. Moderate maturity, in fact very fresh for any white wine at this age. Flavors and aromas are very good, but the concentration and density of this wine were particularly memorable and noteworthy. A rare treat, thank you, Michael.
Red
1995 Bernard Dugat-Py Mazis-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru
flawed
Two bottles were opened, both were a stewy mess that I will hypothesize was due to heat damage somewhere in their history.
Red
1986 Joseph Drouhin Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Rouge France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
87 points
Very good fruit remains, just with a little too much structure. Firm with pronounced tannins, particularly near the end.
Red
1988 Domaine des Chezeaux Clos St. Denis Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos St. Denis Grand Cru
94 points
My WOTN. This Ponsot/Chezeaux was amazingly floral with simply alluring aromatics. A subtle and balanced 1988 on the palate, with equal contributions of earthy and fruit flavors. Long and well textured.
Red
1999 Maison Leroy Volnay 1er Cru Santenots France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
90 points
Not quite as exciting as another bottle from a few weeks ago. Ripe red and black cherry with moderate spice and floral notes.
Red
2001 Bouchard Père et Fils La Romanée France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Romanée Grand Cru
From magnum. Decanted ~2 hours before serving, but that wasn't nearly enough. Lots of dense black fruit, faint red cherry hints. Great fruit, moderate spice hints, no really evolutionary development coming through yet. Didn't really show Vosne spice and character to me tonight, but I think that's just its youthfulness. Still this was better than another magnum tasted last year.

1990 Louis Jadot Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Domaine Louis Jadot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
91 points
Served alongside the 1997 vintage. This 1990 comes across as more ripe, showing a good combination of fruit and evolved aromas and flavors. Less expressive of terroir to me tonight. Others preferred this to the '97.

1997 Louis Jadot Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Domaine Louis Jadot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
93 points
Served alongside the 1990. Ripe and powerful black fruit aromas and flavors with a slight roasted meat character. Long, powerful, very fresh and vibrant. I easily preferred this vs the '90, while some others disagreed tonight.
Red
1996 Hubert Lignier Clos de la Roche France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
Lots of pretty ripe fruit with good concentration and slight hints of espresso and liqueur. An unusual and sweet note protruded slightly near the finish that I didn't fully enjoy, but overall a really good wine. A don't recall ever having this '96 before, so didn't have a complete frame of reference.

2001 Domaine Drouhin-Laroze Chambertin-Clos de Bèze France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
90 points
Overall very nice, just slightly more advanced than I'd expect from 2001.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Jacques Selosse Substance France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
This is an extreme styled Champagne. Very large and monolithic to me, coming across as slightly underripe. There is something very exciting and energetic about this wine, but it's just not a style intended for me.
