Introduction
We were honored to have Giovanni Pesquero-Elia to share some of his wonderful Piemonte wines.
The Brocard Chablis were samples left by the distributor which I happily tasted through and consumed.
Flight 1 (5 notes)
Red
2010 Paitin di Pasquero-Elia Barbera d'Alba Serra
Darker core with medium extraction, dark ruby rim; berry fruit, fresh, some herbs, deep, slight sundried tomato; medium density on the palate, soft caressing tannin, good acidity, tart dark berry fruit; tasty.
Red
2010 Paitin di Pasquero-Elia Barbera d'Alba Superiore Campolive
Dark core with dull crimson rim; sweaty berry, game, somber compared to the Serra, sundried tomato, stewed cherry, earthy; grainy tannin, a bit more intensity (Superiore), sour cherry finish, meaty; good.
Red
2009 Paitin di Pasquero-Elia Langhe Nebbiolo
Dark core with lighter crimson rim; herbs, mint, currant, meaty; more substantial mouthfeel than Italian varietals alone, some tannin, leather, cherry pit on the finish; good.
Red
2011 Paitin di Pasquero-Elia Langhe Nebbiolo
See through darker crimson with lighter rim; light, classic Nebbiolo, cherry, strawberry, a little leather, cherry pit, some sweet wood not from oak, roses; initially light sweet cherry fruit with strong tannin but this opened up beautifully over the following days to come; a really well made wine that is as good as many producers' Barbaresco; great QPR.
Red
2008 Paitin di Pasquero-Elia Barbaresco Vecchie Vigne Riserva Sorì Paitin
Very dull crimson with large color change to light orange rim; cherry, menthol, red currant, forest floor, mushroom; same flavors on the palate, initially sharp acid and strong wrap of tannin that helped with airtime; still very youthful but I like the secondary nuance this is already developing.
Flight 2 (6 notes)
White
2011 Jean-Marc Brocard Chablis Vieilles Vignes de Sainte Claire
From 60 year old vines; pale greenish yellow; faint nose of briny green apple, some richness from the malo, lemon zest, fine chalk dust, obvious impact of nobility and saliva inducing quality; definitely less fat on the palate than the nose suggests, obvious Chardonnay, tart green apple and lemon, chalk resonates; delicious.
White
2012 Jean-Marc Brocard Chablis Domaine Sainte Claire
From 30 year old vines; pale bright yellow green; more upfront and giving with candied sour green apple, sweet lemon, tart yellow fruit, very Chardonnay, slight waxiness; good richness but it fades fairly quickly, same flavors as the nose; simpler but still good.
White
2011 Jean-Marc Brocard Chablis 1er Cru Vau de Vey
From 25 year old vines; steely pale green with yellow hues; some malo is evident, bright lemon and lime, limestone, and sea water mist, a little straightforward but I like the depth; very nice palate of Granny Smith tartness, sour citrus, malo adds depth, long saline finish; very good and I really wanted to drink this.
White
2011 Jean-Marc Brocard Chablis 1er Cru Vaulorent
From 45 year old vines; deeper pale yellow green; deeper and richer even yet with malo, lemon, green apple, almost chamomile component, and a sea breeze; seemingly more ripe but a bit less balance at this stage, power and richness though not yet detailed, long lemon and limestone finish; give this some time to come together as it is very good.
White
2010 Jean-Marc Brocard Chablis Grand Cru Valmur
From 30 year old vines; pale green with yellow hues; malo notes, honey, green and tart red apple, faint lemon, limestone and chalk dust; no malo notes on palate, green and red apple continue, powerful and rich, grainy minerality and wonderful cut; this actually got better after a couple days in the fridge when it really showed its Grand Cru breadth.
White
2010 Jean-Marc Brocard Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos
From 30 year old vines; very pale greenish yellow; fat and deep on the nose with malo notes, obviously well put together, riper yellow fruit, lemon, lime, some apple, almost peach; big making a large swath across your palate, comes in like the tide and leaves a long salty sea water finish; not that delineated today but still a pleasure to drink though give this a few years and you should have quite a treat!
Closing
It was great to taste several wines from 2 Old-school producers that are champions of the grapes and the region they come from.
