Introduction

Great evening organized by Jay R...Gary, Jay, Tony Mitch all there...and some new members of the crew. Everyone brought one white and one red, for an impressive lineup of Burgundy for the night

Flight 1 (14 notes)

White
1992 Maison Leroy Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

First wine of a big night...We didnt decant, wine was a little closed but then opened after about 20 minutes and continued to improve for an hour

Deep gold color, still looks fresh. Sophisticated nose, white flowers, honey, tropical fruits. Palate was citrus/lemon, honey, butterscotch. As it opened, even more secondary nuances of lemon/lime zest.

Gorgeous wine at 22 years...still has a way to go. My #1 white of the night.

Second white of the evening. Medium gold color. Nose showed a flinty minerality and an oily petrol (Riesling-like). Mid Palate was rich with baked apples, pears, quince, lemons, white flowers. Strong minerality on the finish

Excellent wine - aged well. Classic Leflaive balance and elegance
White
1989 Louis Latour Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
flawed
Premoxed...dissapointing

Medium straw/gold color. Nose was minerally/stones, spice, some licorice. Got much more fragrant after about 20 minutes. Palate was poached pears, green apples, lemon/lime. A chalky minerality on the finish, with smokey notes and new oak.

Very nice and up against some very tough competition this evening
White
2005 Domaine Michel Niellon Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos St. Jean France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
90 points
This was my contribution. Nose was reticent, sulphur/matchstick, crushed rock. Palate was pears, pineapple, toasted nuts, faint licorice

Overall, the wine was a tad closed and didnt do as well as the last bottle. Last bottle had 45 minutes to breathe, which seems to make a big difference. Still very young, will let it rest a few years and be sure to let it unwind

This one had been open for a bit by the time we got to it, had the benefit of opening prior to first tastes. Bright clear gold color. Nose was very big but elegant - perfumed fruit, butter and honey. Palate repeats with lime zest, nuts, honey, Medium/long finish.

First experience with this wine - very nice Grand Cru.

Wine had been opened a bit so was showing beautifully by the time we got to it. Nose was wet stone, lime, white flowers - fragrant and elegant. Palate repeats the minerality with a rich mid palate of baked apples, tropical fruit. Long finish with nuances of candied fruit.

Thanks to Mitch for bringing this - stood up to some very tough competition - one of the more unique (and unknown to me) wines of the evening. The QPR on this is amazing...unfortunately it doesn't appear to be available anywhere in the US...
Red
1961 Société Civile du Domaine de la Juvinière Aloxe-Corton Pougets France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Aloxe-Corton
On to the reds, Jay brought this one, no one knew the wine but we couldnt resist the opportunity to open a 53 yr old Burgundy...

Surprised to the upside, still had a fair amount of fruit. Nose was black tea, oyster shells, salinity/ocean notes, smoke. Evolved nicely in the glass. Palate was dusted rhubarb, spice, white pepper. Finish was medium. Nice addition to the night and overall experience
Red
2005 Comte Armand Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru

This was my contribution to the reds...Very young wine, still dominated by primary flavors. Nose was black fruits, cinnamon, earth. Palate was dark fruits, plums, smoke. High acidity and young tannins. Long finish.

This is a big wine, still young and primary - didn't compare as well to some of the older reds in the evening, lacking some nuance at this stage. Needs time - will be very good in another 5+ years

Nice ruby red color, to the rim

Nose had some burnt sugar, caramel notes candied red fruits. Palate was tart red fruits, strawberry, plums. Fresh tasting, like a much younger wine. Medium finish with nice secondary flavors. In the middle of the pack for most at this tasting, some very tough competition. I thought this was great
Red
1999 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Chambertin-Clos de Bèze France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

First experience with this wine. Rich and dense, almost Bordeaux like, compared to a lineup of more nuanced Burgundy. Decanted for about an hour, drank over another hour, still evolving in the glass.

Nose was big red fruits, spices/herbs. Palate was a red/dark fruits, dark cherry. Lush and ripe, a dense wine that benefits from air time. The upfront fruit masked some of the secondary flavors, my guess is this does even better in 5+ years.

Very good, hearty Burgundy. WOTN for several in our group
Red
1996 Domaine Leroy Clos de la Roche France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

Red Garnet/brick color. Nose of cloves, cinnamon, tea and red fruits. Palate was bright red fruits, currant, strawberry, cherry cola, pepper. Light/medium mouthfeel, wine finishes long

Still drinks as a very young wine, has a great arc in front of it. Great!

Towards the end of the tastings, even with some palate fatigue this one popped. Nose was red fruits and burnt sugar. palate was fresh, drank like a much younger wine. Bright red fruits, rhubarb, stewed strawberry, glazed raspberry. Secondary flavors were nuanced, spices, forest floor...

My WOTN from the reds...
Red
1990 Joseph Drouhin Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

Very special wine - last one in a very big night. Nose was rich red fruits, leather, herbs de Provence, pepper. Aromatic and complex. Palate was dark cherry, strawberry, earth.

There was a sweetness to the mid palate and the finish that made it unique. Elegant style, tannins fully resolved. In a great spot
