at Eli Farkash, Savion

Tasted June 8, 2014 by Yagil with 282 views

Introduction

It was Eli's turn to host the Septet.
Yoav didn't show.

Eli hosted very generously: there was everything on the table. The amount of meat was more than double of what we could and should digest...

Re wines: no doubt that Eli invested way more than any Septet host, unfortunately, the wines didn't perform, though "on the paper" they were excellent...
maybe only the 1983 Ch. Margaux had some seducing aroma. That's all...

Flight 1 (3 notes)

Red
N.V. Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único Reserva Especial 1970, 1972, 1973 (1984 Release) Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
80 points
bottled in 1980
probably made of few vintages
opaque red-brown
ripe oxidised cherries aroma with earthy notes
over oxidised flavours, this wine is well over its peak and not pleasant to enjoy any more, since years...
Red
1983 Château Margaux France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
91 points
dark red-purple opaque colour
distinct tertiary aromas of dark ripe fruit, leather, wet earth, sous-bois and fungi.
full bodied, firm tannins, rustic flavours, med balance, lacks complexity, med finish. Med harmony: while the nose was sedative - the palate seemed a bit over the peak with lack of structure...

Red
1997 Gaja Barbaresco Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
88 points
subtle earthy aroma
med bodied, soft tannins, almost no fruity flavours, lacks structure & complexity - this is not a typical Barbaresco, especially for this great vintage.

Flight 2 (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
2003 Marcel Deiss Gewurztraminer Sélection de Grains Nobles France, Alsace
87 points
low intensity but typical aroma
med bodied, not a typical "Selection de Grains Noble" - lacks complexity and power. Somewhat disappointing...
