Introduction

Six of us gathered for a splendid night of white wines and always stellar food pairings.

Flight 1 (8 notes)

White - Off-dry
2008 François Chidaine Montlouis-sur-Loire Les Tuffeaux France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Montlouis-sur-Loire
93 points
Light gold color. PNP, drank 2 glasses over 3 hours. This is a spectacular wine, especially when considering QPR, but regardless of cost, it is a gem. The nose blows up with almond, peach, citrus zest, tropical, very floral. Not to get too technical, but the palate is absolutely slurpilicious. The palate offers a tantalizing array of of tropical fruits, with peach, honey, quince, melon, mango, almond extract, with off dry sweetness that is completely hidden by the juicy fruit and mouthwatering acidity. Wow, so impressive and just a youngster. My and group #2 WOTN. 93+ to 94pts.

White - Sparkling
2008 Vilmart & Cie Champagne Premier Cru Grand Cellier d'Or France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
92 points
Pale gold color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes plus. The nose offers pear, nuts, brisk minerality and citrus with ample tiny bubbles. The palate pops quite nicely, with pear, cream, good energy, sour apples, tart citrus, fairly elegant already, young and primary this will improve with some age. Medium plus finish. Give this at least 2 years. 92+(+)pts.
White
2008 Didier Dagueneau Blanc Fumé de Pouilly France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Pouilly-Fumé
93 points
Pale green color. PNP, drank 2 glasses over 2 hours plus. By my memory, this was one of the best SB I can recall from the Loire Valley or anywhere else. The last year has added immensely to the depth and complexity of the wine. The nose is distinctly aromatic and offers pungent florals, apple, citrus, tropical fruit, mild fresh cut grass and very distinct minerality. The palate is so balanced and fresh, crisp with acidity, bright fruits that offer a wonderful mix compared to the typical requisite grapefruit. Here there is citrus, earth, lime, tropicals, an unctuous texture, oily, chalk, and a very long finish. Very delicious. 93+pts.
White
2010 Domaine Louis Michel Chablis 1er Cru Séchets France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
92 points
Light gold color. PNP, drank 2 glasses over 2+ hours. Loved the nose, even better than the '08 Fevre Bougros. The nose has bright fruit, crystalline minerality, very florals, pungent. The palate offers up an abundance of citrus fruits, grapefruit, citrus zest, kiwi, linear, saline minerality, very tart, with the acid becoming a bit sharp as it came to room temp. 91+ to 92 pts.
White
2008 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Bougros France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
93 points
Light gold color. PNP, drank 2 glasses over 2 hours plus. The nose is somewhat muted, earthy, subdued lemon, mineral. The palate is fuller, great body and texture, lemon oil, saline, minerals, wet stones, line, very long 45sec plus finish. If the nose had more to offer this would score a point better easily. 93+pts. Group WOTN.
White
2010 Mount Eden Vineyards Chardonnay Santa Cruz Mountains USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains
93 points
Medium gold color. PNP, drank 2 glasses over 90 minutes. Lovely nose that offers up toasted oak, vanilla, lemon, white flowers, and great richness. The palate delivers what the nose promises, full body, toasty, lemon, creamy texture, floral, apple pie, fig. The finish is long and caressing. Very suave and sophisticate. Young and will get even better.93+(+)pts. My WOTN, by a razor thin margin.
White - Off-dry
2009 Dönnhoff Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Spätlese Germany, Nahe
94 points
Pale gold color. PNP, drank 1+ glass over an hour. Extraordinary nose with an array of fruits, tropicals, passion fruit, nectarine, lychee, pineapple, floral, mild fusil. The palate is intense and deep with ripe tropical fruit, lime, lime zest, pineapple, passion fruit, searing minerality, crisp acid. Balanced and long.

White - Sweet/Dessert
1990 Château Guiraud France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
90 points
Deep amber color. Drank 1 pour from 375ml. Honey, caramel, botrytis, sugar, dried apricot, orange, mild florals. The palate has good body, botrytis, spicy, orange peel, dried fruits, vanilla, some heat shows through. Sharp on the finish again. Probably on the downward slope.

Closing

All of the wines showed extremely well and this was one of the hardest nights to identify the WOTN. The big three of the night were the Donnhoff, Chidaine, and Fevre.
