Introduction

Had a few friends over to drink some random stuff after a long day of wine shopping:

Flight 1 (8 notes)

White - Sparkling
1988 Ruinart Champagne Brut Millésimé France, Champagne
Maturing orange flavors. Clean palate with a still aggressive mousse and vanilla flavors that grow somewhat heavy with time. A well made, rather straightforward wine. Lots of Chardonnay influence.
Red
1988 Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
A riserva, but not sure whether this is Madonna del Piano. Dusty, even somewhat dirty, red fruit and polish notes. Clear Brunello character to the palate with a tense, somewhat hard finish. Medium bodied, classy wine that improves unexpectedly with time in the glass; still, time to drink this.
Red
1994 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley
Sweet, really appealing Cali Cab nose of dark fruits, cassis, and earth. Less forward and dense on the palate than the nose suggests, but a round, well-textured wine with good body and fine, well balanced tannins. Maybe some room for improvement but really good now.
Red
1991 Ridge Monte Bello USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains
Refined dark fruit and earthy, slightly green nose. Lots of class and sensibility to the palate. Well structured and still very youthful with grainy tannins. Really good and should only improve.
Red
1989 Ridge Monte Bello USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains
Dark, tarry, somewhat advanced nose. More agreeable palate with dark brambly earth influence. Nice mouthfeel and surprisingly concentrated for the vintage. Marginal improvement with time. Still lots of structure. Enjoyable.
Red
1976 Ridge Cabernet-Merlot Monte Bello USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains
Labeled as "Ridge California Cabernet/Merlot Monte Bello" with a 85/15% Cab/Merlot blend with only 11 barrel total production. Seems like it may be an experimental wine. Color-wise showing very few signs of bricking or age. Classic, merlot influenced wine showing plum, menthol, and mushroom notes along with a distinct green streak. Grainy, tannic palate. Would never guess this is 30 years old, but hard to believe the fruit will last as long as the tannins. Enjoyable, and impressively robust, but not special.
Red
1997 Château Giscours France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
Stinky earth and graphite notes. Lighter, less-structured but inoffensive Bordeaux that would be best with food.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2002 Château Pierre-Bise Coteaux du Layon Rochefort-sur-Loire Les Rayelles France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Coteaux du Layon Rochefort-sur-Loire
Bright, honeyed tropical fruits and floral notes. Moderate intensity and sweetness with clear Chenin slightly-musty character. Tangy, sappy finish with good balance. Nice stuff.
