Flight 1 (2 notes)

White
2012 Pierre Gaillard St. Joseph Blanc France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph
Medium/deep straw. Quite complex if not very fresh - honeyed with a touch of orange blossom and clove. Full bodied. Stone fruit, honey, cloves again. Decent acidity, some orangey notes of the finish. Quite serious, but not really my thing **.
White
2011 Domaine Faury St. Joseph Blanc France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph
Bright, medium lemon appearance,. Attractive, light, fresh, floral nose. Medium/full on the palate, attractive florally fruit, welcome fresh acidity, medium length finish. Quaffable, enjoyable, I quite liked this ***.

Flight 2 (2 notes)

White
2006 M. Chapoutier St. Joseph Blanc Les Granits France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph
Medium/deep straw, dull yellow. Nose is dominated by oxidative notes, some stone fruit coming through. Palate is also oxidative and lifeless, if of good length. Don't really see the point of this though I suppose it may just be in an "intermediate phase". *
White
2007 E. Guigal St. Joseph Lieu-Dit St. Joseph Blanc France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph
Brighter appearance, medium straw yellow. Nose is at first mute and slightly oxidative, but slowly coming out of its shell to show stone fruit, creamy vanilla, some florals. Medium/full bodied, attractive slightly creamy stone fruits, nice mouthfeel to this and welcome contrasting acidity on the good length finish. Very good and may improve. ***(1/2)

Flight 3 (2 notes)

Red
2010 Pierre Gonon St. Joseph France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph
Extremely youthful appearance, deep ruby/purple, no rim to speak of. Very youthful nose, ripe black fruit, some spice, touch of florals and black olive. Still quite tannic on the palate but plenty there - needs another 2-3 years to unfurl but potentially excellent **(**).

2006 Domaine Faury St. Joseph La Gloriette Vieilles Vignes France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph
This was as good as ever, with a lovely aromatic nose, florals, black olives and a touch of meatiness, soft tannins, lovely acidity, harmonious good length finish. Excellent. ****

Flight 4 (2 notes)

Red
2005 Bernard Faurie St. Joseph France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph
Still very youthful looking with a deep ruby core and little rim. Nose is reticent - with some spicy dark fruit showing, a slight bitter edge. Palate is very tannic, youthful, some attractive blackberry and blackcurrant fruit but reined in still by its tannic structure which currently dominates and foreshortens the finish. Needs time. **(*)?

Deep ruby garnet. Nose again is slightly reticent showing black fruit and some bloody/iron notes. On the palate something of an austere style, with firm tannins, some attractive dark fruit and notes of soil and iron, slightly tannic on the good length finish. Decent if not compelling ***

Flight 5 (2 notes)

Red
2010 Pierre Gaillard St. Joseph France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph
Medium ruby, medium pale garnet rim. Nose is youthful and fairly simple with slightly herbal black fruit and lots of black pepper. Medium bodied, moderate depth and intensity but tasty nonetheless with blackberries and black pepper, firm but reasonably fine tannins, a slight herbal note coming through on the medium length finish. Very drinkable, "lunch-time" St Joseph, for drinking now and over the next couple of years. **1/2

2007 Pierre Gaillard St. Joseph Les Pierres France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph
Deep, youthful appearance. Nose at first is very oaky, cocunutty, vanilla. It slowly settles in glass to also display some ripe black fruit, but there is still too much oak currently. Medium/full on the palate, with soft, sweet, layered tannins, generous ripe blackcurrant fruit, vanilla, just a touch of meatiness starting to show, nice fresh acidity and a very good length finish. I think this will probably be an excellent wine in a few years once the oak has integrated better. **(**).

flawed
This wasn't quite right - stolid, beefy, reticent, tannic.
