E&R's 5th Annual Beaujolais Weekend

E&R Wine Shop, Portland OR

Tasted November 15, 2014 - November 16, 2014 by David Paris (dbp) with 601 views

Introduction

The third year in a row I've done this event... some of the exact wines were even poured at all three events, which was fun. The usual suspects were the standouts, but there were a few new ones that knocked my socks off for the price, like the 2013 Bow and Arrow Gamay Noir and 2012 Jacky Janodet Moulin-à-Vent Domaine les Fines Graves.

Flight 1 - Day 1 (21 notes)

White
2012 Nicolas Chemarin Beaujolais-Villages P'tit Grobis France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Beaujolais-Villages
87 points
Very fresh, floral and pretty aromas. Quite lovely with just a hint of underlying minerality. Soft texture on the palate. Quite creamy and soft. Lightly lean minerals. Minerals and slight metallic fruit on the finish. Nice richness.
White
2013 Domaine des Terres Dorées (Jean-Paul Brun) Beaujolais Blanc France, Burgundy, Beaujolais
87 points
Soft minerals and lightly floral notes on the nose. Pretty lean texture. Pure and soft, but pretty light on flavors on the palate, with just light lemon and minerals present. Tart, soft and puckering finish. Nice dial up of acid.
Red
2012 Michel Guignier Beaujolais-Villages La Bonne Pioche France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Beaujolais-Villages
89 points
Lean, gritty green notes on the nose, but fairly pretty overall. Thin palate texture with really lean flavors. Soft tartness with a green under ripe berry note. Feels a little hairy in the mouth and carry into the finish. Odd feeling. Lightly smooth puckering acidity on the finish. I like how that puckering dials up. Quite drinkable.
Red
2008 Le Grain de Sénevé Vin de France Roue Libre France, Vin de France
86 points
Lean and soft aromas. Pretty light, but nice. Lean palate with light acid and mild red fruit present. Light tannins, but the flavors are so light that it's the tannins that dominate. Soft finish, which is tart. Structurally feels young, but is it losing its fruit already? Feels like all structure.
Red
2012 Roland Pignard Beaujolais-Villages France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Beaujolais-Villages
88 points
Soft aromas but pretty high toned notes. Soft and smooth palate entry, with tart puckering fruit. High in acid, which gives it a nice presence in the mouth. Pretty lean on the finish, but nice and pretty finish. Tartness is left on the tongue.
Red
2013 Domaine Hamet-Spay Saint-Amour Clos du Chapitre France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Saint-Amour
87 points
Soft, but quite largely fruited on the nose. Very nice but a big boy. Soft and smooth palate entry with some sweet bubble yum bubble gum flavors coupled with puckering tannins. Creamy, but pretty tannic. Some medicinal note on the finish, which is puckering and lean. Less forward fruit here.
Red
2013 Château de Raousset Fleurie France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Fleurie
90 points
Rich and pretty with a charred barbecued meat note and some rich fruit. Yummy. Soft palate entry, with rich, soft texture and mild fruit. Puckering and lean. Lovely tartness with a clean pure high toned fruit finish. Really pretty and rich. Fills the mouth with this high tones. A killer value.
Red
2013 Bow and Arrow Gamay USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
90 points
Smooth and puckering aromas, lean red fruit with some green stemminess. Green notes on the palate too, but also pretty red fruit. Elegant texture. Really lovely and pretty expression. Lovely balanced acidic finish. Quite pretty and rich. Lovely stuff; elegant and smooth. The best Gamay from Oregon I've had.

2012 Christophe Pacalet Juliénas France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Juliénas

Really rich aromas, but perhaps some VA as well. Smooth and lovely, rich fruit on the palate. Very pure and expressive. Quite like the approach here. Smooth tart puckering finish. Very enveloping with pretty intense acidity.
Red
2012 Dominique Piron Brouilly France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Brouilly
87 points
Smooth and lean, puckering aromas. Soft and pretty fruit on palate entry. Lean, soft and light. Finish shows soft acid and a puckering dryness on the tongue.
Red
2011 Karim Vionnet Chiroubles Vin de Kav France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Chiroubles
85 points
Smooth aromas but they are light. Really smooth texturally on the palate, but this is incredibly light in flavor. Really not much other than a tart notion. Similar finish, which also is quite soft and lean.
Red
2012 Daniel Bouland Chiroubles France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Chiroubles
89 points
Smooth and softly fruited aromas. Tart. Really lovely expression of fruit on the palate. Quite rich. Smooth. Puckering on the finish, but nice soft fruit. Very pure, balanced, and focused effort. Very drinkable.
Red
2011 Nicolas Chemarin Beaujolais-Villages Le Rocher France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Beaujolais-Villages
91 points
Smooth and richly fruited aromas. Still feels a little lean, but not showing too much. Very smooth palate entry. Soft and rich, and quite pleasing fruit. Not too much depth, but love the texture. Lovely dial up of depth and complexity on the finish. Lots of layers of texture. Beautiful acid, enveloping layers that unfold on the finish. I really love the finish, but it is a little flat elsewhere.
Red
2012 Domaine Christian Ducroux Régnié France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Régnié
89 points
Rich aromas and quite fruity. Not too much depth though. Soft on the palate with lots of fruit present; quite mild and lean, with some high tone. Rich dialup of acid and intensity on the finish. Rich acids.
Red
2012 Jacky Janodet Moulin-à-Vent Domaine les Fines Graves France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Moulin-à-Vent
91 points
Quite dark in color. This was lovely and forward, with pure red fruit on the very nicely layered and hugely expressive nose. There's also some lovely forest floor noted. The palate is lovely and purely expressive fruit. Really nice and pretty. Soft, but then tannins build. Lovely texture and great structure to balance everything. Soft, enveloping acid on the finish. Lovely texture and really gritty. Fine grained tannins, though. Great wine.

2013 Domaine Hubert Lapierre Moulin-à-Vent Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Moulin-à-Vent
88 points
Rich and dark fruit on the nose. Pure, but a bit hefty. Soft palate with lovely texture. Quite seductive. Fruit is on the heavier, darker side with some strong tannic presence. Dial up of acid on the finish, which is puckering and lean. Interesting compared to that large fruited palate.
Red
2012 Domaine Thillardon Chénas Chassignol France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Chénas
91 points
Very rich. Lovely, beautiful approach and balance. So pure and expressive. Wonderful stuff. So elegant on the nose. Lovely texture on palate entry. It's lean, but really pure and softly fruited. Loveely balance with rich, soft tannins and balanced acidity. Lovely richness. Impressive. Puckering and enveloping on the finish. Really spicy and pure. Lean, but lovely, expressive fruits. Quite crunchy.
Red
2011 Château Thivin Côte de Brouilly France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Côte de Brouilly
86 points
Soft and not very expressive. Smooth and really light on thee palate, which also doesn't express much. Soft, light finish. Enjoyed this bottle more in previous years.
Red
2012 Domaine du Pavillon de Chavannes Côte de Brouilly Cuvée des Ambassades France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Côte de Brouilly
91 points
Light aromas, but pretty crunchy stuff. Richly texture palate. Really lovely, but not too expressive. Soft and smooth and really not revealing too much, but does show its pedigree. Rich acidic balance. Very enveloping acid and purity on the finish. Lovely eruption. Quite nice richness. It really takes over the mouth, leaving it feeling penetrated. Puckering.

2012 Louis Claude Desvignes Morgon Côte du Py France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon
84 points
Rich and soft, with quite large scaled fruit on the nose. Rich, thickly fruited palate. This is pretty hefty stuff. Tart, but a little goopy on the fruit. Puckering acidity on the finish, with a ton of grittiness. Huge fruit. For me this was a little boring and genericly fruited.
Red
2012 Damien Coquelet Morgon Côte du Py France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon
83 points
Some bretty aromas. Really funky and tart. Kind of barfy. Richly fruited on the palate with no sense of that brett, but there's some gritty odd thing that's still off putting. Strange acidity. Puckering, tart VA on thee finish.

Flight 2 - Day 2 (19 notes)

Red
2012 Pierre-Marie Chermette Beaujolais Vieilles Vignes Cuvée Traditionnelle France, Burgundy, Beaujolais
88 points
Slightly green aromas with some herbal spice. Lean and very thin on the palate, but interesting frothy texture. Slightly green notes here too. Nice rich acid on thee finish with lean, slightly red/green fruit at the end.
Red
2012 Jacky Janodet Beaujolais-Villages Domaine les Fines Graves France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Beaujolais-Villages

Lean and green aromas with a bit of must. Still quite light. More green notes on the light palate. Soft texture and a bit prickly, with light tannins. Soft and acidic on the tannic red/green fruited finish.
Red
2012 Georges Trichard Saint-Amour Domaine des Pierres France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Saint-Amour
87 points
Soft and green notes here too, with some layers of red berries. Soft fruit on the palate with light tannins. Slight bitterness. Tart tannins. Green tannins on the finish and that's the primary note lingering. Quite tight, but it is enjoyable.
Red
2012 Lilian & Sophie Bauchet Vin de France L'Herbe Folle France, Vin de France
89 points
A bit bretty and funky on the nose, this also shows lean tart notes and quite a bit of VA. Richly fruited on the lush palate, showing notes of cranberry jam that is quite lovely. Mild tannins. Rich acid on the finish and that lovely lean cranberry note is here too. Lovely acid lingers. If it weren't for that aroma this could be quite fantastic.
Red
2012 Coudert Fleurie Clos de la Roilette France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Fleurie
86 points
Soft aromas with pretty lean red tones. Some bread notes. Thin palate, light and lean. Quite gritty. Puckering and lean finish. Fairly thin for this wine.
Red
2012 Fabien Collonge Chiroubles L’Aurore des Côtes France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Chiroubles
86 points
Lean red fruit on the nose. Puckering and lean palate with soft red fruit. More vibrant fruit is present on the finish, but it's still pretty lean.
Red
2012 Nicolas Chemarin Régnié La Haute Ronze France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Régnié

Soft red fruit. Pretty, but lean. Fairly lovely. Rich, soft and pretty fruit on the palate. Really lovely balance. Smooth acid on the finish.
Red
2012 Domaine Des Vignes du Maynes (Julien Guillot) Chénas Ultimatum Climat France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Chénas

Lean tart fruit on the nose. Soft in texture on the palate, with lean, green flavors. More green tannins on the finish, but here's it's coupled with some tart red fruit. A little bit difficult, this wine...
Red
2012 Domaine Thillardon Chénas Les Boccards France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Chénas
90 points
Soft, pretty red fruits on the nose. Lovely texture on the palate, with awesome soft red fruits. Pretty seductive but the those big boy tannins come in. Puckering on the lean finish.

2010 Domaine Thillardon Chénas Réserve des Blémonts France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Chénas
91 points
Tons of red fruit and floral notes on the nose. Very thick and luscious aromas. Really soft on the palate, with a great thick texture for Beaujolais. Lovely balanced fruit and acidity. Pretty tight at present, though. Opens up a but on the finish with more fruit on initial attack, but then the tannins take over. It's lovely, but still quite primary. I'll probably still wait 5+ years to dig into mine.
Red
2012 Domaine Dupeuble Pere et Fils Beaujolais France, Burgundy, Beaujolais
86 points
Slightly green, mild fruit on the nose. Soft palate entry, which is quite mild, offering just some lean fruit. Pretty lean on the finish too, without much fruit or other flavors.
Red
2012 Guy Breton Beaujolais-Villages Cuvée Marylou France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Beaujolais-Villages

Fairly funky on the nose, perhaps some brett and VA. Soft, light flavors on the palate, but fairly rich. Soft tart tannins with nice structural balance. The finish is soft and creamy fruited.

This smells like DEET and mild red fruit. Soft and lean palate, which is quite puckering but light in flavor. The finish too is light and lean, with some bitter flavors.
Red
2009 Domaine Chignard Fleurie Les Moriers France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Fleurie

Really rich on the nose with heavy dark fruit and a light bit of funk. Really rich and large, creamy fruit on the palate. Very nicely fruited, with lovely smooth texture. Soft and pretty dark in complexion. Different than I recall this wine showing...
Red
2012 Domaine Chignard Juliénas Beauvernay France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Juliénas

Nice red fruit on the nose. Soft and pretty fruit on the mild, balanced palate. Lovely soft red fruit on the hugely tannic finish. Not yielding much.
Red
2012 Domaine de la Voute des Crozes Côte de Brouilly France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Côte de Brouilly

Smells like tobacco leafs and lovely cherry. Soft red fruit on the palate which is really pretty and softly fruited. Soft, tart puckering finish. Lean fruit. Tart.
Red
2009 Domaine Diochon Moulin-à-Vent Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Moulin-à-Vent

Very rich and dark in complexion on the nose. Soft, smooth palate, but puckering acid is present. Rich and smooth. Really chunky woody finish, like I took a bite out of a 2x4. Creamy at the end.
Red
2013 Marcel Lapierre Morgon France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon

Creamy and luscious aromas. Soft on palate entry and really creamy and luscious. Lovely balance on the palate, which begs to be drunk. Quite nice. The finish is smooth, offering rich acids and really lovely impression. Beautifully balanced.
Red
2012 Jean Foillard Morgon Côte du Py France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon

Really rich and luscious aromas, but still gritty ant tight. Soft and creamy palate, with luscious creamy texture. Soft and tannic, but as its held in the mouth you really begin to get an impression of the size of this wine. Tart and rich acid attack on the finish. Lovely.
