Flight 1 - Sylvain Langoureau (4 notes)

Jeanne-Marie de Champs imports the wines of Sylvain Langoureau. Three St. Aubins and a Puligny; the only stylistic surprise was the en Remilly. All wines of quality and interest.

White
2013 Domaine Sylvain Langoureau Saint-Aubin Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Saint-Aubin
This is really nice for village level Burgundy. I like it for the fresh apple, melon, white flower on the nose. Add mineral on the palate with bracing acidity and a surprisingly long finish.
White
2013 Domaine Sylvain Langoureau Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Sur le Sentier du Clou Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Saint-Aubin 1er Cru
Very limestone and saline with flowers, white pepper, lemon. Ripe and even a little creamy but balanced well by excellent acidity. I like this a lot.
White
2013 Domaine Sylvain Langoureau Saint-Aubin 1er Cru En Remilly Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Saint-Aubin 1er Cru
A surprisingly smokey, mineral nose with an almost Rhone-like spice and meat profile on the palate. I liked this but didn't know how to quite fit this into the context of the other St. Aubins.
White
2013 Domaine Sylvain Langoureau Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru La Garenne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
After three excellent St. Aubins, this screams Puligny all the more. Rich, ripe nose with citrus, fruit, and dairy with saline and smoke following on the palate. A lot of character. Round and polished with a long finish. Very good. 40% new oak.

Flight 2 - 2011 Anne Parent (4 notes)

I liked the 11s; interesting and attractive drinking now and over the next few years. A vintage that seems to highlight the differences between climats nicely.

Red
2011 Domaine Parent Pinot Noir Bourgogne France, Burgundy, Bourgogne
Very good for a region level wine actually. Strawberry, mineral, smoke. Easy and honest. There is balance here.
Red
2011 Domaine Parent Beaune 1er Cru Epenottes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
Polished mineral and earth, smoke and leather notes, beautiful Beaune fruit. Loved it.
Red
2011 Domaine Parent Pommard 1er Cru Les Argillières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
Beautiful nose; dark, sturdy purple Pommard fruit with violets and flinty mineral. A great tension to this wine.
Red
2011 Domaine Parent Pommard 1er Cru Les Épenots France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
Excellent; a spectrum of notes with no one element overpowering any other. Lifted, elegant. Purplish Pommard fruit, mineral, rosewater perfume. 50% Grands Epenots and 50% Petits Epenots.

Flight 3 - 2012 Parent (3 notes)

The 12s are just a bit reticent now; how will they develop? My bet is that these will be really nice after a couple more years in the cellar.

Red
2012 Domaine Parent Beaune 1er Cru Epenottes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
Lovely; not as ready as the 11. A shade lighter both in fruit tone and weight when compared to the Pommards. Mineral, purple fruit, some of the earthen notes of the 12. Bright on the palate. Very good.
Red
2012 Domaine Parent Pommard 1er Cru Les Chanlins France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
Anne likens Epenots to a lean golfer, an Aston Martin. She compares Chanlins to an American football player, a Porsche. I see where she's coming from. This is not as refined as the Epenots. Less kaleidoscopic, more broad shouldered and monolithic - but not in a derogatory way. The attack is all velvet in an iron glove and then the tannin takes over.
Red
2012 Domaine Parent Pommard 1er Cru Les Argillières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
The theme tonight is that the 12s aren't as ready as the 11s and this is no exception (unsurprisingly). Dark and flinty; this should evolve well.

Flight 4 - The finale (3 notes)

A great introduction to Chaponnieres, a climat to explore further.

Red
2012 Domaine Parent Pommard 1er Cru Les Épenots France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
Another special Epenots nose; elegant, lace, purple fruits, violets, mineral. Velvety on the palate. Nothing out of place here; I think this will develop well.
Red
2012 Domaine Parent Pommard 1er Cru Les Chaponnières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
A nose with impact, seamless and dark. This was towards the end of the night and it's a shame that my palate wasn't a bit more fresh because this did seem very good.

I wish this hadn't been the last wine of the night because there was a lot of substance here. Leather, animal, fruits across the spectrum. A wine with swagger and class; I enjoyed this.

Closing

Another great learning experience of the sort that only Burgundy provides. The sometimes nuanced differences between the climats was a lot of fun to compare and all the better under the guidance of Jeanne-Marie de Champs and Anne Parent.
