Ultimo wine centre (but now vintage cellars)

Introduction

Change of format as they decided to do a northern vs southern rhone competition at various levels with a couple of Penfolds new release offerings as well. Finally a Cuckoo to knock the other eggs out of the nest in the form of a bolshy warm climate Durif

Flight 1 (9 notes)

Red
2012 Château de Ségriès Côtes du Rhône France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône
Aromas of cherry, spice, slight cedar, perfumed and a little dusty quality. In the mouth the wine has flavours of cherry and slight candy floss, spice and alcohol heat and it finishes a touch bitter.
Red
2009 Cave des Clairmonts Crozes-Hermitage France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage
Medium minus intensity aromas of crushed rock, slightly funky and meaty with cream notes. In the mouth there are medium minus intensity flavours of blackberry with talc textured tannin and a juicy acidic lick. Simple and okay but not really a good QPR
Red
2012 Château de Ségriès Lirac France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Lirac
Leather, slightly meaty, cedar and muted red berry fruit on the nose. In the mouth the wine is almost off dry with ripe red berries - especially raspberry - that are quite spicy and rambunctious. Then there are considerable chalky tannins. Hmm
Red
2011 Xavier Vignon Crozes-Hermitage France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage
Perfumed blackberry and black pepper with slight cream on the nose. The wine is juicy on the palate with flavours of black berry and black pepper and fine tannins. The wine is quite pleasant but it finishes rather unpleasantly - an almost sour milk/off flavour that is at odds with what has gone before.
Red
2009 Xavier Vignon Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Meaty and savoury aromas, some struck flint and muted fruit. In the mouth the wine has meaty flavours, is quite concentrated and vaguely sweet ripe spiced red berry fruit then massive tannic grip that is quite drying. Needs years.
Red
2011 E. Guigal St. Joseph France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph
Aromas of wet clay, green peppercorns and quite perfumed notes. In the mouth the wine has green over black peppercorns and some black berry notes. Fine tannins. Savoury. Okay.
Red
2013 Penfolds Bin 138 Shiraz Grenache Mataro Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
Cream, vanilla, caramel, ripe red berry fruit on the nose. Plentiful oak flavours over ripe red berry fruit, vanilla, cream, spice on the finish, gum grip from the tannins. It is what it is - well made, mass produced, DYA. Perhaps a bit dull and obvious for some (me).
Red
2013 Penfolds Shiraz Bin 128 Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Aromas of cream, vanilla and ripe black berry fruit. In the mouth the wine is quite thickly textured (medium plus intensity body) with flavours of blackberry over black pepper. Quite flour textured tannins. My wine-snob alter ego is surprised that I like this but I do. Good for 3 years?
Red
2010 Nugan Estate Durif Manuka Grove Australia, New South Wales, Big Rivers, Riverina
On the nose initially plentiful American oak - vanilla, coconut with cream over black plum and berry fruit and spice. In the mouth the wine is quite juicy with slightly unripe black berry and currant notes, vanilla, cream and a little spice. Rather nice.

Closing

pretty dull stuff i'm afraid. the last two were my favourites. perhaps I was just in a jammy mood...
