Flight 1 - Tasting (12 notes)

White
2014 Quinta do Alivio Vinho Verde Portugal, Minho, Vinho Verde
87 points
Very floral nose, lovely hint of sweetness, light, apple, pear; pleasant palate, supple, very light body, refreshing acidity, slightly lactic, sweetish fruit flavours; fresh and fragrant finish. Very Germanic.
White
2014 Foral de Melgaço Alvarinho Portugal, Minho, Vinho Verde
89 points
Hint of reduction on the nose, floral, perfumed, citrus, good depth, box tree; lovely balance, elegant, steely, lees ageing adds some richness; good length.
White
2014 Filipa Pato FP Bical & Arinto Portugal, Beiras, Beira Atlântico
88 points
The Bical was aged in new Allier barriques for three months to season the barrels. Lovely marriage of lemony freshness and some fleshy weight, yellow apple and pear, slightly resinous finish. Reminds me of a Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc.
White
2013 Wine & Soul Douro Guru Portugal, Douro
Field blend, not more than 5,000 bottles produced annually, 144 bottles imported in NL. Very oaky nose, tannic palate, the wood dominates the fruit, not sure whether it has the energy and weight of fruit to find its balance with time. Not rated.
Red
2012 M.O.B. Dão M.O.B. Portugal, Beiras, Dão
86 points
A blend of Touriga Nacional, Alfroceiro and Jaen. Light. bright fruit, modern, cherry, allspice, refreshing acidity, gentle tannins, more than a hint of dryness on the finish, unripe phenolics. Expensive.
Red
2011 Quinta do Centro Pedra e Alma Portugal, Alentejano, Vinho Regional Alentejano
88 points
A blend of Cabernet-Sauvignon, Alicante Bouschet and Trincadeira. Ripe fruit, plums, fleshy, oak spice, well-integrated oak, good depth, good intensity and length, drying finish. Solid and savoury but lacks harmony and finesse - a bit disjointed.
Red
2011 Quinta de Foz de Arouce Vinho Regional Beiras Tinto Portugal, Beiras, Vinho Regional Beiras
89 points
A blend of 80% Baga and 20% Touriga Nacional, aged in two year old oak barrels. Lovely nose, violets and cherries, open, hint of oak, attractive phenolic grip, slender but supple, medium body, clean flavours, good length. Excellent QPR.

2005 Quinta de Foz de Arouce Vinhas Velhas de Santa Maria Portugal, Beiras, Vinho Regional Beiras
91 points
100% Baga, aged for 18 months in new Allier barriques. Wonderfully pure Baga character, dusty and very tannic but good integration, lapsang, leather, soft fruit, slender, refreshing, lovely balance, very good length. Excellent wine, but lacks the complexity and charm for a higher score.
Red
2011 Quinta do Vale Meão Douro Monte Meao Vinha dos Novos - Granito Portugal, Douro
89 points
Cherries, slightly lactic, spices, modern, floral, fresh, attractive, light flavours, medium body, pure phenolics from the skins. Expensive.
Red
2009 Quinta Vale D. Maria Douro C.V. ("Curriculum Vitae") Portugal, Douro
94 points
Beautiful nose, harmonious, aniseed, granite, ripe fruit, complete, open, deep, warm, oak spice, complex, floral touches; wonderful presence on the palate, elegant, firm but ripe and finely grained tannins; a wine with line and length. Outstanding.
Red
2011 Wine & Soul Douro Pintas Character Portugal, Douro
92 points
Slightly rustic style, ripe fruit, slightly dusty, has freshness and great mineral energy, tobacco, liquorice, very good length. Develops well in the glass. Needs time.
Red
2011 Prats and Symington Douro Chryseia Portugal, Douro
93 points
Wonderful purity and balance, classic composition, "claret from the Douro", velvety, noble oak, youthful, complex, deep, harmonious, quite a technical wine but extremely well made.

Flight 2 - Lunch (3 notes)

Red
2010 Prats and Symington Douro Prazo de Roriz Portugal, Douro
85 points
Light, juicy, jammy-sweet, unripe tannins combined with almost nutty overripe fruit, harsh edge. Not for me.
Red - Fortified
2011 Quinta Vale D. Maria Porto Vintage Portugal, Douro, Porto
95 points
Elegant style, raspberries and flowers, feminine, silky, ripe but energetic, charming, transparent, cool and mineral, medium sweet, precise, pure, wonderful tannic, exquisite balance and freshness. A most Burgundian vintage port. Stunning.
