Introduction

Wines are tasted double blind in flights, which are arranged randomly, but as much as possible from light to heavy. Each flight is discussed & unveiled before moving on to the next flight.

Flight 1 - Warm ups (5 notes)

The Perrier was tasted nonblind.

White - Sparkling
N.V. Joseph Perrier Champagne Cuvée Royále France, Champagne
89 points
Tasted nonblind. Notes of green apple and almond. Fine bead with good acidity. Green apple, pear and almond flavors.
White
2013 Soliste Cellars Sauvignon Blanc Lune et Soleil USA, California, Sonoma County
88 points
Aromas of melon and white fruit follow through on the palate. Medium+ finish. After the first sips I thought it was Chenin- very round and somewhat rich. On the second pass, citrus notes became apparent and the acid came up. Guessed Sauv Blanc, but wasn't sure of its origin.
White
2013 Bedrock Wine Co. Sauvignon Blanc USA, California, Sonoma County
Opens with smoky/flint qualities, followed by orchard fruit and spices. Develops a grapefruit quality and the acidity is bright. Guessed Sauv Blanc.

White
2011 Curran Grenache Blanc USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Ynez Valley
89 points
Opens with notes of tropical fruit and banana. The palate reveals more fruit- peach and almost a lychee/Gewurz quality with softened mineral notes underneath. Not enough spice or richness for a Gewurz though, so guessed Alsatian Riesling.
White
2012 Bedrock Wine Co. Compagni Portis USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley
Spice and peach notes. White fruit, melon and citrus qualities but austere and almost harsh through the finish. No guess.

Flight 2 - Reds (4 notes)

Red
2009 Barboursville Vineyards Cabernet Franc Reserve USA, Virginia, Central Virginia, Orange County
88 points
Garnet color in the glass. Aromas of herbs and caramel, dark fruit and plum. Plummy dark fruit on the palate, followed by spice and cinnamon. Dark fruit and white pepper notes; herbal. Guessed older Zinfandel.
Red
2008 Domaine Pavelot (Jean-Marc et Hugues) Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru La Dominode France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru
91 points
Light ruby color. Cherries, herb. tar and pine resin aromas. Medium-bodied with flavors of black cherry, mineral, tar and herbs. Good acidity and structure, but young. Let these rest a while yet. Drink 2019+.
Red
2010 Twomey Pinot Noir Russian River Valley USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
92 points
Ruby color. Initially a bit reticent, this really opened in the glass after fifteen minutes or so. Notes of cola, cherry, orange zest and spices. Flavors of cherry, cooked strawberry, rhubarb and spice with a lengthy finish. Good underlying acidity. 92-93 pts.
Red
2007 Château Eugenie Cahors Cuvée Reservee De l'Aieul France, Southwest France, Cahors
90 points
Pours an inky crimson color. Aromas of forest floor, plum and dark fruit, herbs and earthy funk. Medium-tannins are still somewhat firm, supporting flavors of dark fruit, plum, mineral, herbs and peppery spice. Finishes nicely. Drink now - 2020.

Flight 3 - Reds (4 notes)

Red
2008 Domaine Pavelot (Jean-Marc et Hugues) Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Aux Guettes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru
88 points
Tasted blind. Ruby color. Notes of spice and black cherry. Cherry on the palate, but the acid is a bit much for the fruit. Perhaps this will come into balance with a bit more age.
Red
2008 Torres Cabernet Sauvignon (Black Label) Mas La Plana Spain, Catalunya, Penedès
90 points
Notes of dark fruit and herbs with cherry undertones. Flavors of dark fruit and tar, herbs and mineral with nice acidity. Finishes well, with plenty of fruit and length. Guessed Syrah.

Red
1999 Fowler Pinot Noir USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros
89 points
Cherry and rhubarb with hints of spice. The palate follows the bouquet, adding a dark fruit component. Juicy cherry notes carrying the finish. 89+ pts.
Red
2012 LaRue Wines Pinot Noir Rice-Spivak USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
88 points
Light color. Perfumed cherry and floral aromas. Candied cherry, mineral and florals on the palate with heightened acidity. The fruit fades on the midpalate and finish and the acidity dominates; disjointed. Guessed CA Pinot Noir.

Flight 4 - Reds (4 notes)

Red
2004 La Rioja Alta Rioja Gran Reserva 904 Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
90 points
Crimson color with notes of herbs, black fruit, tobacco and cedar. Medium tannins and softened acidity with flavors of mixed berries, cherry, tobacco and sandalwood. 90+ pts.

Red
2008 Susana Balbo Brioso Argentina, Mendoza, Lujan de Cuyo, Agrelo
92 points
Dark color. Aroams of chocolate, cassis and dark fruit. Plum, chocolate and dark fruit on the palate. Tannins are firm, but slightly sweet and fine-grained. Finishes with good length; balanced across the palate. Guessed Napa Cab Sauv.

Flight 5 - Dinner/dessert wines (3 notes)

TLV made a couple of batches of ribs which turned out absolutely perfect. I'd be hard-pressed to ever recall a better batch of ribs- well done, TLV. Along with roasted potatoes and spicy baked beans, we had a wonderful dinner with some wines that paired very well. These wines were served nonblind.

Red
2010 Seghesio Family Vineyards Zinfandel Block 8 San Lorenzo USA, California, Sonoma County, Alexander Valley
89 points
Nonblind with dinner. Dark fruit with raisin undertones. Medium-bodied and fairly well balanced with flavors of cherry, boysenberry, spice and raisin. Medium+ finish.
Red
2004 Roger Sabon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Prestige France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
87 points
Has a ripe dark fruit overtone with red fruit and herbs underneath. Pruny and ripe on the palate.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1999 Grande Maison Monbazillac Cuvée du Château France, Southwest France, Dordogne, Monbazillac
90 points
Golden with notes of apricot, honey and peach. Rich texture. Flavors of baked apricot, marmalade, grilled pineapple and honey. Long finish.
