Tasting all the 2009 Cru's with Aldo Vacca of Produttori del Barbaresco

Introduction

Another fantastic event at E&R, this time with the general manager of Produttori del Barbaresco, Aldo Vacca. Just two months ago E&R tasted most of these wines with the importer/distributor, but this tasting was a sit down event and included tons of additional information which I found very interesting. The Produttori works with 50 farmers currently, but in 1958 that number was just 19. Interestingly, it was a local Priest that brought the growers together to make wine instead of selling their fruit off! During the 1950s most of the Barbaresco production was about quantity. Produttori was founded on quality wine, though. Of course recently all producers must be focused on quality to survive, but Aldo described that it never used to be this way.

The Produttori was founded on three principles:
1. Make only Barbaresco.
2. "100% Belonging". 100% of the farmers fruit needs to go to the Produttori. Obviously, if it was any other way the growers would hold back the best fruit for themselves.
3. Reward the quality of fruit in the payment. They actually measure the sugar, color, and tannin of the grape and give a score, paying accordingly.

1961 was the first year they bottled their own wine under the Produttori del Barbaresco label, and 1967 was the first year they did single vineyards, which they were a pioneer of. The current production is 45,000 cases (half a million bottles). The breakdown of that: 20% Langhe Nebbiolo (all declassified Barbaresco), 30% single vineyard Cru wines (when bottled), and 50% Barbaresco Normale, which includes some of their 9 single vineyards, but primarily other vineyards within Barbaresco (of which there are 66 named). The same winemaker is used for all the wines. These days, if any new grower is approached to join (or vice versa), all the current farmers need to approve the new.

As for production technique, all the barrels (botti) in the cellar are 25 hectoliters to 100HL, and they age 30-36 months. They did not make single vineyard wines in 2010 because the wines were deemed "too light to qualify" for single bottling. They had 3 rainy days in September that causes this, perhaps. The soil wound up staying wet the whole month.

As to these specific wines, quite clearly 2009 was too warm of a vintage for me. I found a lot of the wines both thin in texture and hefty in dark fruit, with steamy alcohol pervasive throughout. This is not a vintage I'll be buying into here. Aldo mentioned he thinks these wines will probably be drinking best about 10 years from vintage (thus, a mere 4 years away!). Which again, to me, means it's not my style of vintage. Still thankful to have the wonderful experience of Aldo's storytelling, and to get to try all the Crus together. Hope to be able to do this again in a vintage more in line with what I like here!

Flight 1 (9 notes)

2009 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Pora Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
1967 was the first vintage of this wine. Aldo recommends aging this for 7-9 years. The aromas are quite pretty, showing bright fruit character with a lovely charcoal and gravel dust note. Soft and light in texture on palate entry, but shows pretty red fruits. Quite light tannins in the mouth. There's some volatile acidity on the finish of this bottle that I did not detect on my previous bottle. Tart, light tannins linger. Score would be around 88, but this bottle isn't consistent with my previous.

2009 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
90 points
This is the farthest south of the Crus, with full southwest exposure at a lower altitude. The Produttori holds 80% of Rio Sordo, with only 2 total growers in the Cru. They added this to the portfolio in 1978, making it the youngest single vineyard in their portfolio. Fresher aromas here, and brighter red fruit than the Pora previously. Soft aromas, that are light and bright, showing primarily pretty red fruit. The palate is fresh and enters balanced. Quite pretty and remains balanced as its held in the mouth, including notes of gravel dust. Puckering tannins and acid on the finish, which lingers quite long. Pretty vibrant.

2009 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Pajè Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
87 points
There are four owners of Pajé. Based upon my prior note, I bet this wine was a bit reduced upon pouring. The aromas are a little funky, and also expressing some dusty gravel and weird plastic shavings. Creamy on the soft palate entry. Mild and balanced tannin and acid; quite forward in the palate. Puckering acid on the finish and tastes a bit hot, including darker fruit. Didn't really enjoy this wine.

2009 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
89 points
Something I was wondering... why did this previously used to be called "Moccagatta" and now it's "Muncagota"? In 2007 they moved to the "Piedmontese spelling", and previously it was the Italian spelling (dialect differences). The vineyard is due south east, which is the only Cru they hold pointing this direction. The aromas offer yet darker aromas and more gravel dust. The fruit is primarily red, but certainly bordering on black. Nice fruit on palate entry, with good balance of round, soft clean fruit. Nice textural balance, including puckering tart acidity, which is pleasing against the round texture. Really really high acid on thee finish, which is nice, but today the weight of the finish is a bit more than I'd prefer. Just too large in texture for me.

2009 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Ovello Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
90 points
12 families farm Ovello, and only 30% of this wine winds up in the single vineyard at Produttori, most headed to the Barbaresco Normale. Soft aromas, but the alcohol is noted here as well, along with creamy red fruit. Soft and creamy on palate entry, offering lovely pure red fruits and puckering acidity and a mellow presence. Nice and soft. Creamy on the finish as well, which comes across as luscious despite the puckering acidity and tannins. Light and lean overall, with nice balance. Still not sure it quite has the stuffing to age long, though.

2009 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Montefico Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
89 points
Vineyard faces full south, next to Ovello, but Montefico sees more sun. Soft nose, with some alcoholic whiffs coming in as well. Darkly fruited. The palate is also showing dark fruit, dark tannins, and puckering acid. The profile is very deep and dark. Puckering tannin attack on the finish and the alcohol gets in the way here as well. Quite bitter.

2009 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
90 points
The vineyard is a warm site, facing full south, and is often described as the "most Barolo tasting" of the lot. This is my favorite wine in the cellar, most vintages. The aromas are quite pretty but also grippy, showing gravel notes and deep fruit. Thick texture on palate entry as this wine is quite luscious and juicy in the mouth. Quite soft, pretty fruit and well structured. Puckering and tart on the grippy finish. Nice and puckering. I do like this, as it offers power and elegance, but this too leans a bit too dark in complexion for me.

2009 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
87 points
A nice story Aldo told about this wine was that the 1971 vintage, a local chef bought 11,000 bottles of Rabajà, which really put the first big spotlight on the Produttori. As told, 1971 was the proverbial "vintage of the century" in Barbaresco. The Produttori used to hold about 90% of Rabajà, but with all the attention on this particular cru, several growers have left and they now hold about 50% of it.

Holy cow is this wine ever dark fruited and extracted smelling on the nose. I get notes of glue and solvents. Palate entry is lean and thin, with some green notes with moderate acid... what a surprise after that heavy nose. Really puckering and lean finish with some alcohol on the finish. I think this one somehow got away from them...

Hefty and steamy aromas on this one, again; quite thickly fruited. Nice fruit on the palate, but the body is rather thin and tart. Puckering, lean and tannic on the finish, with dark, thick fruit flavors.
