Introduction

Every participant had to bring a wine of the theme. We did not know which wines were brought by the others. All wines were tasted blind, also without knowing when the wine you brought was poured.

Flight 1 (2 notes)

Red
2012 Argiolas Costera Italy, Sardinia, Cannonau di Sardegna
86 points
In the bouquet red cherries and berries like raspberry and strawberry, a bit lactic, green herbs and some bell pepper and white pepper. All impressions come back on the palate, also some licorice and bitterness. Medium plus acidity and tannin. A bit heat in the finish. Overall a pleasant and still youthful wine. 86 - 87
Red
2011 Sella & Mosca Cannonau di Sardegna Riserva Italy, Sardinia, Cannonau di Sardegna
87 points
Very transparent red. In the bouquet minerals and rustic flavors are the first things to notice, some red fruits, herbs and marzipan as well. On the palate red fruits like strawberries and cherries, some candy stick, herbs and minerals. A touch of sweetness and mild acidity and tannin. Pleasant wine. ready now and the next few years.

Flight 2 (3 notes)

Red
2009 Mas d'en Gil Priorat Coma Vella Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
90 points
In the bouquet cherries, dark berries, yoghurt and a pleasant dose of oak. On the palate a very ripe and sweet start, cinnamon, sweet licorice, a good dose of fresh and soft acidity and mild tannin. Lovely wine with a lot of sweetness. For today I score it 90 (again), but with a few more years of ageing some more finesse might show, so the score can go up a bit.

2010 Domaines Lupier Navarra El Terroir Spain, Navarra
89 points
The bouquet is still locked, but shows red fruits like raspberries. On the palate creamy red fruits; cherries, some herbs and spices, sweet licorice, a firm dose of sweetness but also a firm amount of fresh acidity, mild tannin and soft bitterness in the finish. Overall a round and pleasant wine. Give it a few more years of ageing. 2017 – 2020.

2012 Artazu Navarra Santa Cruz de Artazu Spain, Navarra
90 points
In the bouquet some fruit lemonade, smoke, sweet spices and salty licorice. On the palate a lush wine with a firm dose of sweetness, chocolate and sweet licorice, mild acidity and tannin. For the group the most favorite wine in the flight. 89 – 90 Give it a few more years of ageing.

Flight 3 (3 notes)

Red
2007 Turkey Flat Grenache Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
88 points
Probably because the wine is a bit older it first showed vegetables in the bouquet, followed by sweet licorice, some medicine, truffles, mint and some rustic flavors. On the palate a sweet start with alcohol, eucalyptus, oaky flavors, still some red fruits acidity, green herbs and sweet licorice root. Overall an interesting and maybe even tempting wine with many different flavors which is completely ready now.
Red
2012 Yalumba Grenache Old Bush Vine Australia, South Australia, Barossa
89 points
Creamy bouquet with cherries, raspberries and mint. On the palate a very juicy wine with red fruits, mint, some herbs and spices, chocolate, a firm dose of sweetness well balanced by also a firm dose of fresh acidity and mild tannin. Overall a well balanced and tasty wine with a good concentration and some subtlety. Maybe it will improve a bit with a few more years of ageing. For tonight 88 - 89.
Red
2013 Vriesenhof Grenache South Africa
88 points
Perfumed bouquet with a lot of strawberries in the bouquet, also minerals and spices like clove. On the palate quite special with combinations of candy stick, minerals and red fruits, sweet licorice and licorice root. Juicy and good acidity, soft tannin and a good length. Something special and certainly not unpleasant. Ready now and the next few years.

Flight 4 (3 notes)

Red
2011 Domaine Roche-Audran Côtes du Rhône Villages César France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône Villages
90 points
Beautiful bouquet with red fruits, herbs and spices, sweet licorice root and anise. On the palate sweet and lush with red fruits, herbs and spices, mint, beautiful acidity and soft tannin. It has 15% abv which is not disturbing. Really beautiful wine, certainly for the vintage and with a very good qpr. Completely ready now and the next few years.
Red
2010 Domaine Santa Duc Gigondas Grand Grenache 66 France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas
At first I thought the wine was ok, but a bit later it was really odd. As if there was a second fermentation in the bottle. I really hope this is just an off bottle because I have a few. There will be several follow ups, but for tonight no score.

Flight 5 (2 notes)

Red
2003 Domaine de Cristia Châteauneuf-du-Pape Renaissance France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
93 points
This wine is a blend of 60% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre and 10% Syrah. Beautiful and mature bouquet with good garrigue, sweet spices like cinnamon, chocolate and iodine. On the palate a delicious wine with chocolate, sweet spices, garrigue, some coffee, really beautiful acidity and mild tannin with still some bite left for the near future. There is some alcohol showing, but the wine is in such a beautiful drinking stage so that is hardly disturbing. For me (and most of the group) this was the WOTN.
Red
2006 Domaine de la Solitude (Lançon Père et Fils) Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve Secrète France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
92 points
The bouquet is still quite youthful with dark berries and cherries as well as some pleasant rustic flavors. On the palate a concentrated wine with good dark and red forest fruits, chocolate, herbs and spices, beautifully fresh acidity as well as round tannin. Really beautiful wine in its young maturity stage now. Around 2020 this will probably still be a real beauty.
