Introduction

Its been an easy and warm late autumn so far, but yesterday dipped to the low 30's. Nevertheless, we still took the dog on a long walk. Upon returning, I was looking for some big, warming wines. These fit the bill.

It had a been a while since I tried this. Screw capped. Purple in color. The nose has a lot of black raspberries, cedar, some black pepper. Slight reduction that blows off quickly. On the palate, this is very good. Not much complexity but still drinks quite young. With air, it starts to unwind and show more. I am not sure how much better it will get, but I think a bit. Any way, no harm in opening now or waiting. Clearly not for everyone though. There is plenty of oak on the nose and the palate. That said, I enjoyed it.

This is in a good spot. Perhaps just starting to reach maturity. A long life ahead. It needed about 30 minutes of air to blow off some bottle stink and then kept improving until the bottle was drained. Purple in color. The nose has black raspberries, chalk, leather and slight earthiness. On the palate, lush black raspberries intermingled with chalkiness and earthiness. Nice balance. Warming but no heat. Purchased on release.

Had a bottle five years or so ago that was "unpleasant". This was the opposite. Wow. This was fantastic. Purple in color. The nose is exuberant with black raspberries, licorice, slight vanilla and plums. Just gorgeous texture. Mouth coating yet supple. Delicious. Lots of fruit but enough acidity to be balance. Plums, black raspberries and slight burnt earthy notes. Long finish. The kind of wine that makes you keep taking sip after sip as its so delicious, but you want to slow down and contemplate it. Probably five to ten years from full maturity but at a great stage right now.

There is some Switchback left for Day 2. I will be curious to see where it goes.
