Introduction

This was our annual CDP tasting with what was a nice lineup of wines.

Flight 1 (11 notes)

White - Sparkling
2006 Piper-Heidsieck Champagne Brut Millésimé France, Champagne
92 points
Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. This starts off more masculine, but evolves and becomes lighter and more elegant. The nose has plenty of dough, very fresh, clean, minerals, apple. The palate becomes more medium bodied, apple, apple, skins, more expansive over 15 minutes, good acid, crisp, tart, biscuit, good length. Really quite quite nice and should be even better down the road a bit.
White
2009 Rhys Chardonnay Alpine Vineyard USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains
93 points
Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes plus. A fun wine that seemed focused from the start, but got even better with air and as it warmed. I love the orange character here, oranges, orange peel, and orange blossom on the nose, with lightly toasted oak. the palate is medium full bodied, orange, modest toasted oak, good acid, round, lemon, and a long pure finish. Love it.

1995 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
96 points
Dark red color, no bricking. Slow-O for 2 hours, double decanted for 15 minutes and an additional 30-60 minutes open in bottle. Drank 1+ glass over 3 hours. Ethereal, absolutely incredible, a classically beautiful Clos des Pape nose with an amazing floral perfume, violets, whispy garrigue, pipe tobacco, fine leather, gorgeous red fruits, earth and a dose of funk, on top of asian spice mix and some blood. The palate does not take a backseat here at all, and it has a lot to live up to with this nose; medium bodied, silken texture, dry forest floor, raspberry, dark cherry, pipe tobacco, beef blood, leather, hints of tar, floral, near fully integrated tannins, and a ridiculously long finish. Perfect balance and a totally wow wine in as good a place as one can imagine - just makes me giddy with joy. Should hold for 5 to 10 years. This where I wish we drank all of our CDP's. Unanimous WOTN. 96+pts.

2000 Le Clos du Caillou Châteauneuf-du-Pape Domaine du Caillou Les Quartz France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
94 points
Dark red color. Decanted for 30 minutes; drank 1 glass over 3 hours. Probably should have given this another hour of air as it took awhile to really come into its own. Floral, though slowly emerging and still quite the perfume we've gotten at times; cherry, sour cherry, kirsch, anise, and some earth. The palate is medium full bodied, almost seems young with primary fruits tonight, slowly giving more depth and complexity, cherry, kirsch, anise, tart, light earth and long finish. This was so good again, though less multi-dimensional than it has been. My and group #3 WOTN.

2000 Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Dark red color. Decanted for 30 minutes; drank 1 glass over 3 hours. This was the other wine tonight that I was looking forward to more than any of the others. I've had it rock and be very good. Tonight was very good, but not a rock your world experience, Lovely cedarbox nose upfront, sour cherry, muted nose, tightly coiled, opens more over 90 minutes, some perfume comes forth, a bit of leather. The palate is medium bodied, briary, oak, bright raspberry, some cassis, spicy finish. This was pretty tightly coiled and just willing to really unwind it what I think it ultimately it will be. 92+ to 93pts.

2001 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
93 points
Very dark red color. PNP with a touch of slow-O time. The nose is savory, brett, lacquer, dense, black fruits, garrigue, black pepper. The palate starts out disjointed with some heat and volatility, settles down for the most part over an hour, tons of spice, pepper, oak, leather, black fruits, black cherry, lots of garrigue, full bodied, liqueuerish. This wanted to be a bit of a brute tonight. Showed its youth in spades. IMO this needs a good 3 hours or more of decanting if approaching now, or give it 5 years to begin to get there.

2005 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Dark red color. Decanted for 3 hours; drank 1 glass over 2 hours. Dark berry nose, spice, bright fruit, juicy, earth, the floral element is lurking but there. The palate is dense, full bodied, cassis, raspberry, some blue fruits, a bit sappy, spice, hints of savory, long finish. This is going to be a real honey in ten years. My #4 WOTN.

2005 Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
93 points
Dark red color. Splash decant; drank 1 glass over 2 hours. Looking back on my last notes from this wine, it seems to be following along slowly. I love the purity of the strawberry notes of the nose and palate, really lovely. Very primary fruit, though it strikes me as more red now than the last time I had it, good acidity, the tannins are already pretty sleek, youthful, but pretty integrated today. Fun to drink now, but another gem in the making. 92+ to 93pts

2007 Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Very dark red color. Decanted for an hour plus at the table, drank 1 glass over 90 minutes. This needed the air, but did show its pedigree pretty well over time. A nice mix of anise, blue and darker red fruits, young, quite intense on the palate, coiled nose. 92+ to 93pts currently. Hold.

2007 Domaine Bois de Boursan Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée des Félix France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
94 points
Very dark red/purple color. Decanted for 90 minutes; drank 1 glass over an hour plus. This was the surprise of the night, not because it was so good, but because of how good it was already. This was a sheer delight to drink tonight. Open and ready for business. There's an opening dill note on the nose and palate that
I found quite appealing, garrigue spices, black fruits, cassis, funky, damp earth, black cherry; the palate is full bodied, a good bit of glycerin, keeps its balance together well, spiced, long. A bit hedonistic, but hard to resist. My and group #2 WOTN.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2009 Château Nairac France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac
92 points
Light gold color. PNP, from 750ml. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. Very fresh, great fruit, primary, orange, orange peel, tropical fruit. The palate is consistent, honey, sticky, lively, orange, long finish. Drinking well and should develop nicely.
