Introduction

Every participant had to bring a wine of the theme. We did not know which wines were brought by the others. All wines were tasted blind, also without knowing when the wine you brought was poured.

Flight 1 (2 notes)

Red
2014 Bodegas Viña Elena Jumilla Bruma Viñas Viejas Spain, Murcia, Jumilla
86 points
In the bouquet a lot of creamy cherries. On the palate a somewhat sweet start with ripe cherries, medium acidity and soft and round tannin. Some pleasant bitterness in the finish. Still very youthful and not for really long ageing, but the wine drinks easy and has some elegance.
Red
2014 Bodegas Viña Elena Jumilla Bruma Finca el Calvario Spain, Murcia, Jumilla
87 points
Concentrated wine with high viscosity. In the bouquet a lot of green herbs, creamy cherries and blackberries. On the palate cherries and raspberries, a touch of sweetness and also good acidity. Round tannin with a soft bite. Still a bit lactic. Can age a few years. Very correct wine.

Flight 2 (3 notes)

Red
2000 Mas d'en Gil Priorat Coma Vella Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
89 points
This bottle seemed a bit more developed than the one a tasted last September last year. Bottle variance? In the bouquet beautiful herbs and sweet spices like cinnamon, some leather and game. On the palate still some dark berries, chocolate, sweet spices and coffee. Good acidity and melted tannin. Medium plus length. The wine evolves in the glass quite quick and not for the better. Drink up. Still 89 for this evening, but it will only go downwards from here. (If this bottle is exemplary.)
Red
2000 Cellers de Scala Dei Priorat Prior Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
In the bouquet cherry liquor bonbon, red fruits and the first signs of lovage/celery. Same on the palate, currants and raisins, a bit special, some sweetness, acidity and soft tannin. The wine is not bad and still reasonably pleasurable to drink if you like very mature wines, but in fact it is a bit too old. No score.
Red
1998 Viticultors del Priorat (Mas de Subira) Priorat Prior Terrae Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
91 points
Beautiful bouquet with sweet herbs and spices and brown spiced biscuit. On the palate beautifully soft spiciness, cinnamon, vanilla, tobacco and brown spiced biscuit again. Good acidity and slightly drying tannin. Medium to long finish. Beautiful wine still and it is fully mature. No reason to wait any longer.

Flight 3 (3 notes)

Red
2013 Clos 93 Priorat L'interrogant Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
87 points
In the bouquet creamy dark berries and cherries and chocolate. On the palate lactic cherries and juicy red berries, vanilla and espresso, some sweetness, good acidity and round tannin with a soft bite. Still very youthful and can use a few years of ageing. Around 2019? 87+? for this evening.
Red
2012 Celler Vall Llach Priorat Embruix Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
90 points
In the bouquet a lot of vanilla, dark forest fruits, cherries, thyme and some alcohol. On the palate dark (blackberries), but also some red berries, coffee, chocolate, vanilla and other sweet spices, a firm amount of sweetness (from the alcohol?), also good acidity and round tannin. Some bitterness in the finish. With 15.5% ABV quite high, but nevertheless a harmonious and pleasurable wine.
Red
2010 Celler Vall Llach Priorat IDUS Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
92 points
Luxurious bouquet with beautiful oak, sweet spices like cinnamon, leather and preserved fruits. On the palate red and dark berry fruits, a firm amount of vanilla from the oak, sweet spices, herbs, chocolate, good acidity and round tannin with a pleasant bite. Already pleasurable now, but this can easily last until into the 2020’s and might gain a bit in score. 91 – 92 for this evening.

Flight 4 (3 notes)

Red
2006 Mas Doix Priorat Salanques Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
92 points
Beautiful bouquet with dark fruits like blackberries and leather. On the palate dark forest fruits, red berries and cherries as well, a lot of sweet spices, vanilla, chocolate and flint stone minerals. Firm and fresh acidity and still slightly sticky tannin. Most of the tasters thought this was the best and most elegant wine of the flight. Maturity stage now, but it can easily last another few years. Unfortunately it was my last bottle. 91 - 92
Red
2006 Mas d'en Gil Priorat Clos Fontà Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
91 points
The bouquet is still a bit locked, but shows herbs and spices, leather and tobacco. On the palate juicy red and dark forest fruits, herbs, chocolate, some sweetness good acidity, soft and round tannin and a firm amount of alcohol. Overall a very good wine in its early maturity stage. Give it a decant or wait two more years so the bouquet is more expressive. 91 for this evening.
Red
2005 Domini de la Cartoixa Priorat Clos Galena Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
91 points
Beautiful bouquet with vanilla, espresso, sweet spices like cinnamon and caramel. On the palate a lot of sweet spices, green herbs, chocolate, juicy, good acidity and still youthful slightly sticky tannin. Although showing signs of development, the wine is still youthful and nicely concentrated. Have a few, so there will be a follow up. 91+ for this evening.

2005 Clos Mogador Priorat Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
92 points
In the bouquet a lot of herbs and sweet spices and red as well as dark berries. On the palate the same impressions. A lot of chocolate. Very ripe fruits. The alcohol shows a bit. Good fresh acidity and soft, round tannin. Shows ageing and was not as good as the 2006 we tasted beside it. Very ok wine though. This bottle was completely ready now.

Red
2012 Mas Doix Priorat Salanques Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
92 points
The bouquet is still quite locked and shows dark berries, herbs and spices and dairy. The latter will disappear with ageing. On the palate juicy and youthful dark forest fruits and dark cherries, licorice, laurel and vanilla from the oak. Good fresh acidity and supple, round tannin with a good bite. Overall a concentrated and yet elegant wine. Still very youthful. Probably wise to wait until 2020 at least. Keeping it until 2023 will not be a problem.

2010 Mas Doix Priorat Costers de Vinyes Velles Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
93 points
In the bouquet a lot of sweet and ripe dark forest fruits, well dosed and beautiful oak, chocolate and some rustic impressions. On the palate dark forest fruits, a lot of chocolate, sweet spices, coffee and vanilla from the oak. A bit rustic. Good and fresh acidity and soft, but firm and round tannin with a good bite. A little more elegant and less concentrated than the 2008 we tasted beside it, but certainly a beautiful and still youthful wine. Probably wise to start in the early 2020’s. 93+

In the bouquet dark berries, minerals, bbq meat and gun powder als well as herbs and spices.
