Flight 1 - Whites (5 notes)

Red
2013 Domaine Leduc-Frouin Anjou La Seigneurie France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Anjou
Medium yellow. Forward stone fruit. Medium weight. Rich but dry and tart with a good mineral finish. This is very good for the price.
White
2013 Gérard Boulay Sancerre La Côte France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre
Medium yellow. Bit of sulfur and florality on the nose. Rich, layered texture. Underlying core of zesty white grapefruit. Excellent length. Special Sancerre.

White
2013 Domaines Minchin Menetou-Salon Fumet La Tour St Martin France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Menetou-Salon
Duller yellow. Very forward aromatics of smokiness and grapefruit. Less weight than the Boulay, but great clarity and focus of tart citrus. This is also excellent Sauvignon with a few years of aging potential that is showing much better than it was several months ago when it had just landed.
White
2014 François Chidaine Montlouis-sur-Loire Les Choisilles France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Montlouis-sur-Loire
Light yellow. Vibrant orange aromas. Elegant, medium weight Chenin Blanc. Demi-sec level of off dry sweetness, some pear, fine acidity, terrific mid-palate texture and limestone interplay, than the echo of orange peel on the finish. Very enjoyable for now and the intermediate term.

White
2014 La Grange Tiphaine Touraine-Amboise Bel Air France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Touraine-Amboise
Light golden yellow. Quinc, herbs, and white flowers. Medium weight, pleasing roundness, just off dry fruit, and a very clean, earthy finish that is not nearly as funky as Savennieres.

Flight 2 - Reds (3 notes)

Red
2014 Alliance Loire Saumur Rouge Les Pouches France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Saumur
Clear ruby. Very perfumey, olive nose with light cherry fruit. Light to medium weight. Whoie berry red fruit and green olive. Ready now, low tannins. Simple and straightforward, just as one would expect at this price point.
Red
2013 Catherine et Pierre Breton Bourgueil Les Galichets France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Bourgueil
Deep core. Unusual candied fruit, high toned aromatics that are less herbal than most Cabernet Franc. Medium weight, blueberry fruit and a definite twist of blood orange (as one sometimes finds in red Burgundy). High acidity and significant grip without being too lean or austere. This is not typical, but it is serious and interesting. Much better than when tasted a year ago. Hold for several years.
Red
2012 Alphonse Mellot Sancerre Rouge Les Herses France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre Rouge
Very deeply tinged for Pinot. Dark fruit but mostly crushed oregano on the nose (so much so that it called to mind southern Rhone garrigue!). Full bodied, surprisingly sappy red and black fruit. Chocolatey, ripe tannins, long finish. I would never have guessed Pinot Noir, much less Loire valley Pinot, but I guess it should be appreciated for what it is rather than what is should be.
