Introduction

5 of us gathered at Vic's to take advantage of their reasonably-priced wine list.

Flight 1 (2 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Louis Roederer Champagne Brut Premier France, Champagne
90 points
Drank a glass over about an hour. There is a nice subtle complexity here. Maybe too subtle. Nice lemon and a touch of yeast, seems classy.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Krug Champagne Brut Grande Cuvée France, Champagne
94 points
Drank 1/5th of the bottle over an hour. This started out incredibly feminine, mostly lemon, pear, brioche and acidity. As it sat in the glass, the wine became more masculine, until it was quite toasted and musky. I liked it in both states, although the lighter style was intriguing. From a restaurant, I wonder if this is a very new bottle, as I've not experienced that transformation before with Krug.

Flight 2 (2 notes)

Red
2008 Heitz Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon Martha's Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
94 points
Decanted about 15 minutes and drank 1/5th the bottle over about 90 minutes. This smells like bordeaux. The palate is much richer than Bordeaux, but it is nowhere near the textbook California style. Savory and deep, there is a little mintyness to it, but a little goes a long way here. A touch of pepper on the finish. This wine is right in my wheelhouse and a lovely complex expression of cabernet.
Red
2011 Dominus Estate USA, California, Napa Valley
90 points
Decanted 30 minutes, drank 1/5th the bottle over 90 minutes. This is big and young. The oak is quite present at this moment. It did flesh out well in the glass, showing elegance, minerality and some nice tannins.

Flight 3 (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
2009 Château d'Yquem Declassified France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
91 points
Drank a good-sized glass over about 45 minutes. Lovely tropical flavor, orane marmalade and burnt sugar creme brulee. It has good sweetness and flavor. It could use a touch more acid and is not overly complex. It is quite pleasureable to drink, and the lack of complexity prevents it from reaching the next level.
