Introduction

We knew the theme, but all wines were tasted blind.

Flight 1 (3 notes)

Red
2011 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Le Volte Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
90 points
Beautiful youthful and complex bouquet with e.g. good cherries and herbs and spices. On the palate red and black forest fruits, cherries, sweet spices, some red bell pepper and vanilla. Beautiful acidity and mild tannin and bitterness. An elegant wine with finesse and a good length. 89 – 90
Red
2011 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Le Serre Nuove Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri
91 points
Still extremely youthful bouquet with fruit yoghurt in a positive way, coffee, smoke and beautiful oak. On the palate a concentrated and well structured wine with jammy blackberry and black cherry juice, some smoke, salty licorice and prominent but good acidity. Still very youthful tannin. 91 for tonight, but potential for a little higher score in 4+ years from now.

2009 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Le Serre Nuove Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri
92 points
Beautiful bouquet with cherries, good oak and a touch of pleasant barnyard. On the palate an intense wine with juicy cherries, a beautiful balance between acidity and sweetness, well dosed and integrated oak and round tannin. Early maturity now and room for improvement. At its peak probably between 2016 and 2020. 92 for today.

Flight 2 (3 notes)

Red
2010 Ca' Marcanda (Gaja) Promis Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
89 points
Beautiful and complex bouquet with red and black berry fruits, herbs, sweet spices, some cherry yoghurt because of its youth and earthy flavors. On the palate mainly dark cherries, the acidity of red currants and slightly sticky tannin. Very youthful still. I would wait until at least 2017. At this moment the bouquet is the best part. 89 seems a correct score and there is potential for a bit more.
Red
2007 Ca' Marcanda (Gaja) Magari Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
92 points
Beautiful bouquet with blackberries, smoke, cedar, slate, sweet spices and a pleasant touch of barnyard. On the palate dark and red forest fruits, sweet spices, lavender, some chocolate, bell pepper and salty licorice. Beautiful balance between the (Italian)acidity and a pleasant bit of sweetness. Round and creamy tannin with a good bite. In the beginning of maturity stage. Will probably improve a bit over the next two years and will probably drink nicely until around 2019+. Beautiful and complex wine.
Red
2003 Ca' Marcanda (Gaja) Bolgheri Camarcanda Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri
91 points
The bouquet is not really expressive, but there are red and dark forest fruits, herbs and sweet spices. On the palate a slightly sweet start with mainly red fruits, a lot of soft sweet spices, tobacco, well integrated and beautifully toasted oak. Firm but good acidity, good tannin and bitterness as well and a good length. Beautiful, delicious and complex wine which I scored 91 due to the not so abundant bouquet.

Flight 3 (3 notes)

Red
2007 Ceralti Bolgheri Superiore Alfeo Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Superiore
89 points
Lush ripe fruits, chocolate, mushrooms and forest floor in the bouquet. On the palate red fruits, blueberry, loads of herbs and (sweet) spices like cinnamon, vanilla and nutmeg, chocolate as well. Firm acidity and powdery tannin. Good concentration. Ready now and the next few years.
Red
2005 Ceralti Sonoro Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
91 points
Chocolate, sweet spices, cedar and smoke in the complex bouquet. On the palate ripe fruits, cocoa, a lot of herbs and spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, powdery and smooth tannin. Luxurious wine. Ready now and the next few years.
Red
2005 Tenuta Guado al Tasso (Antinori) Bolgheri Il Bruciato Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri
91 points
Very ripe dark forest fruits, sweet spices and cedar in the bouquet. On the palate ripe fruits as well; juicy cassis, sweet spices, mild tannin and beautiful and elegant, fresh acidity. The wine is completely ready and at its peak now. Great pleasure.

Flight 4 (3 notes)

Red
2002 Antinori Solaia Annata Diversa Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
Dark fruits, sweet spices, cedar and smoke in the bouquet. On the palate however quite tertiary with mushrooms, autumn forest, celery and reductive impressions. Firm acidity and soft, slightly drying tannin. This bottle is by far not as good as the one I tasted in 2012 and in fact a bit too old now. (See also my previous note). Don’t know the history of this bottle. No score.
Red
2009 Poggio al Tesoro Bolgheri Superiore Sondraia Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Superiore
92 points
Beautiful, luxurious and complex bouquet with red and dark forest fruits like blackberries, sweet spices, autumn forest and leather. On the palate all the impression from the bouquet are there as well; a lot of sweet spices, some chocolate, a beautiful balance between the (Italian) acidity and the sweetness. Mild tannin with still a promise. Concentrated and not giving itself completely. Will probably drink even nicer between 2017 and 2020. 92+
Red
2005 Poggio al Tesoro Bolgheri Superiore Dedicato a Walter Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Superiore
95 points
Blackberries, herbs and spices, coffee and chocolate in the bouquet. On the palate dark forest fruits like blackberries and blueberries as well. Toast, smoke and cedar, some pleasant bell pepper and minerals. Perfect balance between acidity and sweetness. Soft tannin. Elegant and complex wine with great finesse and length. Ready now and the next few years. Although the scores in CT are not that high, imho this is a superb wine.

2007 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Sassicaia
95 points
A lot of smoke, toasted oak, dark forest fruits and also a pleasant touch of barnyard in the bouquet. On the palate beautifully ripe red and dark forest fruits, chocolate, sweet spices, soft acidity, tannin and bitterness in a beautiful harmony. Extremely harmonious and luxurious wine. Already a great pleasure. Early maturity now and this will be great during at least the next decade. My score for today was 95+.
