Introduction

We knew the theme, but all wines were tasted blind.

Flight 1 (3 notes)

White
2013 Jacky Marteau Sauvignon Blanc Touraine France, Loire Valley, Touraine
83 points
In the bouquet grasses, apples, lime and a bit of smoke. On the palate green apples, grapefruit, lime, fresh acidity, grasses again and a touch of minerals. Ok, basic wine.
White
2013 Domaine du Vieux Pressoir Saumur Élégance France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Saumur
83 points
Apples and some minerals in the bouquet. Same on the palate. Firm acidity. Also firm bitterness. Overall a proper, basic wine.
White
2010 Vignobles Brisebarre Vouvray Sec France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray
86 points
Expressive bouquet with minerals, smoke, something pleasantly stinky and some honey. On the palate a concentrated wine with green apples, grapefruit, gooseberry and some orange peel. Medium acidity and length and overall certainly an ok wine.

Flight 2 (3 notes)

White
2013 Godon-Reverdy Sancerre Les Caillottes Domaine de La Garenne France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre
84 points
The bouquet shows some white fruits, creaminess, grasses and a touch of honey. On the palate green apples, firm lime acidity, some minerals and bitterness. Ok, just above basic wine.
White
2012 Château d'Epiré Savennières France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Savennières
85 points
Interesting and not unpleasant bouquet with licorice and candy impressions. On the palate quite tight with grapefruit, lime and green apples. Some of the group thought it had some oxidized impressions, but I did not really noticed that.
White
2009 Château d'Epiré Savennières France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Savennières
87 points
The bouquet showed some smoke and fennel. On the palate a concentrated and dry wine. Some oaky impressions, minerals and a good balance between sweetness and acidity. Some noted some oxidized impressions. Good wine. Early maturity now.

Flight 3 (3 notes)

Red
2012 Domaine du Vieux Pressoir Saumur Les Silices France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Saumur
83 points
In the bouquet some cherries and raspberries. On the palate juicy and also dry. Red fruits. A bit herbaceous. Some bell peppers and strawberry. There is some tannin. Ok, basic wine.
Red
2012 Wijngoed Thorn Pinot Noir Netherlands, Limburg, Maasvallei Limburg
86 points
Bouquet with cherries, raspberries and some sweetness. On the palate a lot of spiciness e.g. clove, cherries, some strawberries and some smoke of the well integrated oak. The acidity is ok and the tannin a bit drying. Some bitterness in the finish. A well balanced and tasty wine. For a Dutch wine a really nice surprise.
Red
2010 Charles Joguet Chinon Cuvée Terroir France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon
88 points
Beautiful and fairly complex bouquet with oak, red fruits and herbs and spices. On the palate red fruits, bell peppers, white pepper, ok acidity and medium, a bit sticky tannin. Still a bit reticent. Wait until 2016+.

Flight 4 (3 notes)

Red
2011 Domaine des Roches Neuves Saumur-Champigny Terres Chaudes France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Saumur-Champigny
90 points
A really beautiful bouquet with some pleasant barnyard, cedar, vanilla and licorice. Same on the palate. Cherries, herbs and spices and lavender as well. Good acidity and tannin with a pleasant bite. Really good now and over the next 3+ years.
Red
2008 Charles Joguet Chinon Les Varennes du Grand Clos France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon
89 points
The bouquet is pleasantly stinky. On the palate a juicy wine with herbs and spices, some bell pepper, smoky oak. licorice and a good balance between sweetness and acidity. The tannin still has a firm bite. Really nice now, but around 2018 this will still be perfectly ok.
Red
2011 Domaine des Roches Neuves Saumur-Champigny Franc de Pied France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Saumur-Champigny
86 points
In the bouquet red fruits and a lot of candy impressions. On the palate the same. A lot of sweetness and also a good dose of acidity. There is some tannin. Overall; this is supposed to be an exclusive wine, but with all the candy impressions, for me it comes closer to a Gamay than a Cabernet Franc. Maybe the fruits were overripe?
