Weekly tasting group #174; A mixed set: white, red and sweet.

@ RW with a BBQ

Tasted July 6, 2015 by Zweder with 331 views

Introduction

All wines were tasted fully blind.

This was a historic event; firstly because of the BBQ and secondly because during this dinner/tasting I decided to start a new monthly tasting group on a Tuesday. The two persons who have a good location for the group thought 12 members would be a nice number, so that is what it will be. Five persons who were present this evening (including me) were interested in participating, so we had to find seven more. And that appeared to be no problem. Within two weeks 13 persons told they would like to take part in this new group. So unfortunately I had to disappoint several who are already a member of the other tasting groups I started. (I gave priority to completely new wine lovers.)

Flight 1 (3 notes)

White
2009 Scali Blanc South Africa, Coastal Region, Paarl, Voor Paardeberg
flawed
In the bouquet yellow fruits, some honey and nuts. On the palate astringent oxidized flavors. Nuts, caramel and a firm amount of bitterness. Tasting it blind I first it could be the style, but on second thought this must be a faulty bottle. And that is more in line with my TN from 2012. No score.
White
2012 Domaine du Tunnel (Stéphane Robert) St. Péray Cuvée Prestige France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Péray
90 points
In the bouquet white and yellow fruits and some flowers and oak. Same impressions on the palate. Very mild acidity. Overall a beautiful and complex wine in its early maturity stage.
White
2012 Weingut Jean Buscher Nibelungencuvée Germany, Rheinhessen
87 points
In the bouquet white and yellow fruits and also some minerals and barnyard flavors. On the palate aromatic with a touch of sweetness and very mild acidity. For below $10 (directly from the domain) this is a good qpr wine.

Flight 2 (3 notes)

Rosé
2011 Domaine Tempier Bandol Rosé France, Provence, Bandol
The bouquet is not very expressive but shows some rose buds. On the palate some small red fruits, nicely dry with pleasant acidity and bitterness. Very harmonious and tasty. The Rosé fans around the table were very enthousiastic.
Rosé
2014 Château Puech-Haut Pic St. Loup La Closerie du Pic France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Pic St. Loup
Some red fruits in the bouquet and on the palate. Tasty, nicely dry, mild acidity and some bitterness. Ok rosé.
Rosé
2014 S.A. Prüm Pinot Noir Rosé Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
In the bouquet rose buds and also barnyard impressions. On the palate quite special with some sweetness, mild acidity and some bitterness. Fairly full bodied for a rosé. Special.

Flight 3 (3 notes)

Red
2011 André Vonnier Moulin-à-Vent France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Moulin-à-Vent
79 points
Cherries and raspberries in the primary bouquet. On the palate the same fruits, candy acidity but also a bit harsh. This is a basic Beaujolais and a very basic Moulin a Vent.
Red
2012 Domein de Wijngaardsberg Pinot Noir Netherlands, Limburg, Ulestraten
In the bouquet red fruits, some smoke, coconut and some barnyard. On the palate a firm amount of toasted oak, some special acidity and soft tannin.
Red
2012 Keth Weingut St. Laurent Germany, Rheinhessen
84 points
Slightly different tasting note compared to the previous bottle. This time mostly cherries in the bouquet. On the palate primary fruits like cherries and red berries, ok acidity and mild tannin. The toasty and chocolate impressions hardly showed.

Flight 4 (4 notes)

Red
2011 Dehesa de los Canónigos Ribera del Duero Solideo Crianza Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
88 points
Red and dark forest fruits in the bouquet. Some vanilla as well. On the palate a quite sweet start with ripe cherries, beautiful oak and acidity. The wine has a good length and a bit heat in the finish which is imho not really disturbing. Will improve with 3 - 4+ years of ageing. 88+
Red
2009 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
flawed
This bottle was heavily corked which is the bad news. On the other hand good the cork was pulled today, otherwise it would be a great disappointment a decade from today. Luckily there was a second bottle which was great.

Red
2009 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
93 points
Still very youthful and luxurious bouquet with cassis and other dark forest fruits, cigar box and beautifully dosed oak. Same impressions on the palate, beautiful acidity and tannin and full bodied, but much too young. The finesse already shows in this harmonious wine, but it will be wise to wait until 2023 or a bit later. 92 - 94+ for tonight.

Red
2008 Agostina Pieri Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
90 points
Beautiful bouquet with black fruits, some spiciness, minerals and earth. Same impressions on the palate with some metal, autumn forest, beautiful acidity and tannin. Approachable and in its young maturity stage, but the wine will evolve for the better in the next 2+ years.

Flight 5 (2 notes)

Red
2012 Ego Bodegas Jumilla Don Baffo Spain, Murcia, Jumilla
89 points
Ripe dark cherries and berries in the bouquet. On the palate the same juicy fruits, not yet fully integrated oak, a pleasant balance between acidity and sweetness, round tannin, very full bodied, but in fact still much too young. Wait at least until 2018 or 2019. 89+ for today.
Red
2013 Familia Zuccardi Bonarda Emma Argentina, Mendoza
86 points
Primary cherries, dark berries and raspberries in the bouquet. On the palate red and dark fruits, some minerals and a firm dose of chocolate. Pleasant acidity and tannin. To be honest I am not such a big fan of Bonarda, but this is a wine I can appreciate.

Flight 6 (2 notes)

Red
2013 Francis Ford Coppola Zinfandel Diamond Collection Red Label USA, California
87 points
Some red and dark berry fruits in the bouquet. On the palate juicy dark fruits, a touch of sweetness but also good and fresh acidity, soft tannin, pleasant oak and a bit heat in the finish. Overall a good wine. 86 – 87
Red
2012 Kaiken Malbec Ultra Argentina, Mendoza, Valle de Uco, Vista Flores
88 points
Not so many notes. Dark forest fruits and blood in the bouquet. On the palate dark and red berries, some sweetness, oaky flavors, good acidity and round tannin. Early maturity now and will drink nicely over the next 3+ years. Ok qpr.

Flight 7 (2 notes)

White - Sweet/Dessert
1999 Black Prince Winery Vidal Icewine Canada, Ontario, Ontario VQA
90 points
Apricots, apples and cinnamon in the bouquet and the mouth. Beautiful balance between acidity and sweetness. Great concentration.
White - Off-dry
2011 Weingut Reinhold Haart Piesporter Goldtröpfchen Riesling Spätlese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
92 points
Beautiful bouquet with white fruits like apples and litchi and peach, some petrol as well. The same impressions on the palate with a beautiful balance between acidity and sweetness. An elegant beauty with good complexity.

Flight 8 (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
2010 Château Rieussec France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
93 points
Beautiful bouquet with apricots, honey and orange peel. Same on the palate, pineapple as well. Very opulent with beautiful youthful freshness. Great concentration. Great in this youthful stage and in can last more than a decade at least.
