Introduction

Another oustanding tasting put on by JG. All wines tasted blind, except the Prum.

Flight 1 - A lovely starter (1 note)

White - Off-dry
1983 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
94 points
Surprisingly light yellow in color. Elegant, gentle nose with nice fruit. Beautiful and youthful on the palate. Spritz acids, apple notes, lemon meringue. Excellent.

Flight 2 - Round 1 (2 notes)

Red
1996 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
95 points
Nose of bright cherries and crushed stones. Beautiful, acidic, and just a bit austere. Iron/manganese notes underneath gorgeous cherry fruit.
Red
1998 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin-Clos de Bèze France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
92 points
Nose of maraschino cherries with a bit of earthiness; a touch sweet on the nose as well. Lovely wine, much more earth-driven than the Clos St Jacques. A bit smoky, darker, not nearly as acidic. Initially rather funky and tight on the nose; opens up and cleans up nicely over 30 minutes in the glass.

Flight 3 - Round 2 (2 notes)

Interesting how several really well-trained palates absolutely loved the Coche-Dury, while I really didn't like it. Sure had a ton going on, but most of what was going on didn't really interest me. Not sure if my palate will grow to like those or not (sort of hoping it won't - will save me a few $$).

White
2002 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Gouttes d'Or France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
93 points
The nose is light / elegant yet heavy at the time...sort of like a thick meringue. Lemon-lime, limestone, and apricot predominate, with a tiny touch of oak.
White
1999 Coche-Dury Puligny-Montrachet Les Enseignères France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet
Whoa! Enormous hazelnut funk and burnt toast on the nose. On the palate, burnt orange peels and hazelnuts. Much better than the nose. Lots of stuff going on here. Cleans up a bit. The flavor profile is thick and viscous. Lengthy finish. Others loved this, but it's not my style.

Flight 4 - Round 3 (2 notes)

Second time with a Dervieux. Definite find for me.

Red
1988 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie Brune et Blonde France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
91 points
Tar, and a bit of iron on the nose. On the palate, tar, spice, and more tar. Very dark. Very nice.
Red
1980 Gentaz-Dervieux Côte-Rôtie Cuvée Réservée Côte Brune France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
94 points
Nose of cedar and pure fruit, with a touch of earth. MMMmmmm....beautiful wine. Floral perfume with wonderful pure fruit. Excellent, but the finish doesn't live up to the rest of the wine.

Flight 5 - Round 4 (2 notes)

Red
1988 Domaine Truchot-Martin Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
92 points
Earthy nose, with dark moss and cigar box notes. Acidic, with bright strawberry notes.
Red
1985 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Nose of fresh-baked chocolate cake, and cocoa. On the palate, dark red fruits and some tar notes. Tannic, with lovely fruit. Slightly sour finish, but plenty of fruit. Didn't mark down a score.

Flight 6 - Round 5 (2 notes)

3rd time around with the 70 Montrose. Continues to impress me. The Mayacamas was a first for me - a beautiful wine.

Red
1970 Château Montrose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
Earthy nose. Dark, sweet fruit, with tobacco and mineral notes. Clearly bordeaux. Lovely wine. Didn't jot down a score.
Red
1970 Mayacamas Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Mountain USA, California
94 points
Earthy nose, with a touch of alcohol. On the palate, lovely dark cherry, acids, and earthy notes. Moss, cedar. Beautiful wine.
