2007 Vintage: Napa Valley vs. Washington State

Lincoln Squre Steaks, Amsterdam Ave, New York City

Tasted August 3, 2016 by SMHalps with 337 views

Introduction

All the wines were opened at the restaurant 90 minutes before we poured the first wine. None were decanted. As the wines were consumed one at a time, the last two wines were open for at least 2 and 1/2 hours before we poured them. We started with a white wine and a champagne before moving on to the reds. Only the red wines are listed here. The sequence of the wines was as follows: (all 2007 vintage) Anderson's Conn Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Reserve, Betz Family Cabernet Sauvignon Pere de Famille, O'Shaughnessy Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain, Andrew Will Sorella, Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Galitzine Vineyard and the Larkmead Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Solari.

This was a wine tasting group of 10 people, and we had the restaurant week menu for dinner, plus a plate of oysters as a starter.

Really enjoyed this. Parker had rated the 2008 version of this wine higher than the 2007. I was disappointed in the 2008, but the 2007 was a pleasure to drink. Popped and allowed to breathe for an hour before we drank it. It showed really well.

A great surprise of the night. Stood up really well to more expensive 2007s wines. Really well balanced and a treat to drink. Its a full bodied well balanced Bordeaux blend.

Unlike my previous bottle of this wine, I was able to open and allow it to breathe for over an hour before drinking it. No doubt that really helped as this showed really well. Dense purple color and a great nose. In a great place right now.

Somehow I keep expecting more from this wine. Maybe Parker's 96 point rating sets me up for disappointment. On its own, I'm sure I would love it, but in tastings, it always seems to finish lower than it should, given its rating. WA says its "firmly structured" and I would go along with that. Maybe another year or two and it will really hit its stride?

My group of 10 was split on calling this WOTN. We were able to let this breathe for over 2 hours before trying this. It went well with the hanger steak I ordered. Long finish, great fruit and beautiful nose. The oak notes don't overpower the wine.

My last bottle, and while it might improve with age, it was outstanding. Still plenty of youthful fruit, but not in an overpowering way. Long finish. Great nose, and loaded with the black fruit flavors of blackberries. As soon as we poured this, the group commented on the amazing aromas.

Hard to pick a favorite as they were all really good. I would probably say the Betz was the surprise of the night, but part of that was that no one in my group had ever had it before. The group seemed split between the Quilceda Creek and the Larkmead as the favorite. If push came to shove, I would vote for the Larkmead Solari. My least favorite wine was the Andrew Will Sorella. No to disparage Andrew Will, but something has to finish last. Maybe its too early in its drinking window? It just seemed a touch behind the other wines, maybe if Parker and WA hadn't rated it 96 points, I would have had less expectations and enjoyed it more.
