GSM comparison with friends

Tasted August 5, 2016 by td1836 with 283 views

Introduction

A fun wine night with a couple friends comparing a southern Rhone GSM, a northern California GSM made in a Rhone style, and a Paso Robles GSM made in an extremely different style. All three wines were decanted 2.5 hours before beginning.

Flight 1 (3 notes)

Reddish brown color really coming through on the edges now starting to show some age. Definitely get red fruits mixed with meaty/bacon aromas, and lots of earthy and barn yard components. Medium weight with some herbs on the finish. Drinking really well right now.
Red
2014 Halcon Vineyards Esquisto USA, California, North Coast, Yorkville Highlands

The color here is a purple/red, with much more clarity compared to the CDP. This has fresh red and blue fruits, spices, and a wonderful smoothness on the finish. It doesn't have the barny smells/flavors of the St. Jean, but it really more enjoyable to drink. This was the group's unanimous favorite between the 3 wines tonight. Will be interested to see if a few years of age brings out any additional complexities. Every bottle of Halcon I open continues to exceed expectations; Paul is making some tasty, well-made, and very affordable wines.

Deep, dark purple/black color. The nose seemed dominated by stewed cherries and a lot of alcohol, making it not very pleasant. The palate was just as extreme, big hot fruit, some spice, but out of balance. Obviously looking at other tasting notes, I'm in the minority here. This is just not my style. When I had this last year on it's own, I enjoyed it more. But having it side by side with the two other more restrained GSMs made this very hard to enjoy.

Closing

It was interesting to see the differences in style and to see where everyone's preferences fell. The small group was in agreement on the order preference of the 3 wines.
