1955 Cantina Mascarello Barolo Riserva Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

[Double-decanted at about 10am.] Mulchy decadent nose with notes of cherries, tar, balsam, and licorice. Gorgeous and sweet in the mouth with a long, tart, surprisingly fresh sour cherry finish. Wow. A great bottle of this wine.

[Double-decanted at about 1pm.] Sour cherry nose. loads of sweet and sour cherries. Long and delicious. Not the best 58 I've had, but an excellent wine.

1982 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

[Double-decanted at about noon.] Big, smoky nose of red fruit and flowers. Thick and complex. Very long finish. A great bottle of this wine, maybe the best I have had. The WOTN for me. If I had to pick one wine for dinner tonight, this would be it. This is the epitome of Barolo from Barolo: Loads of sweet fruit but with grace, and a wonderful balance between elegance and power that leans just a bit toward the elegance side.

1990 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
92 points
[Double-decanted at about noon.] No nose. Rich, young, tannic. Lots of sour cherry and a tannic bite. Maybe this just needs more time? Other bottles of this didn't seem to, but this one seems quite backward or unresolved. Or is there a hint of some taint that is throwing it off? 92?

Flight 3 (4 notes)

Red
1995 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

[Double-decanted at about 1pm.] Big smoky black fruit nose. Rich and delicious. Surprisingly still quite young. Very tasty.
Red
1996 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
98 points
[Double-decanted at about 11am.] Very dark black fruit. Very tannic, but with massive amounts of fruit as well. A monumental wine with a great, great future. If I could put a case of any one wine from this tasting in my cellar, this would be it. This will be brilliant for the next 40 years. 98-??
Red
1997 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
89 points
[Double-decanted at about 11am.] Sour cherries, tar, and licorice. Oddly short and simple. The least impressive wine so far.
Red
1998 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Bitter. An off bottle.

Red
1999 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
95 points
[Double-decanted at about 9am.] Black fruit nose. Big, sweet and structured. Very young, with a great future. Put this away for at least 5-8 years. 94-96
Red
2001 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
96 points
[Double-decanted at about noon.] Woodsy black fruit nose. Sweet, balanced. Very young, but much more drinkable than the 1999 tonight. Moreover, this has a great sense of harmony characteristic of the best 2001s. Terrific! 96-?
Red
2005 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
94 points
[Double-decanted at about 10am.] Black fruit and tar nose. Long, sweet, tannic, black fruit. Not quite in the same class as the the 99 or 01, but like the 1995, this is showing the vintage proud. An excellent wine that should drink well for the next 20 years.

Flight 5 (3 notes)

Red
2006 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
95 points
[Double-decanted at about noon.] Smoky black fruit nose. Tart, tannic, backward, but with those characteristic sweet black cherries. Very long and delicious. The vintage gives the kind of structure that yields a great wine in the hands of the Mascarello family and their vineyards. This was the vintage after Bartolo passed away. It will be a great homage for at least 30 more years to the legacy he left behind in his daughter, Maria-Teresa. 95-?

Red
2007 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
[Double-decanted at about 11am.] Muted nose. Overripe palate. Gooey sweet. Weird. I have used the word "sweet" many times in this tasting to convey the impression of sweetness, but not actual sweetness due to residual sugar. Here, I actually mean sweet. As it turns out, the winery tells me that this wine has 2-3 times the RS that is typical in their Barolo. Judgement reserved. This might work better with a cheese course.

[Brought by Mark S. Pop and pour.] Complex botrytis nose. Expansive and complex. I may have had too much wine to fully appreciate this luscious delicious wine.
