K&L 2000 Bordeaux Tasting

K&L, San Francisco

Introduction

Overall this was a wonderfully enjoyable tasting with lovely wines that I would almost universally love to have with any dinner. The prices were all high, but there were some standouts including the Grand Puy Lacoste and the Vieux Chateau Certain. The Pichon Baron and Lynch Bages were both good but underperformed for the price, though I have some and remain hopeful that they will improve over the next decade or longer.

Flight 1 (10 notes)

White
2014 Y de Yquem France, Bordeaux
92 points
Lovely aromatic nose with grassy, white fruit; palate is full bodied, nice richness, medium-plus acidity, excellent fruit; medium-plus finish. 92-93
Red
2000 Château Canon-la-Gaffelière France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
88 points
Lovely nose with aromatic herbs, blackberry, notable cab franc at 30%; palate is medium-full bodied, integrated tannins which are slightly harsh, simpler palate; medium finish. Very nice nose but the palate falls flat. 88-89
Red
2000 Château Rauzan-Ségla France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
91 points
No bricking; Highly aromatic, perfumed, floral, black fruit, good depth; palate is full bodied, plenty of black fruits, integrated juicy tannins, silky texture; medium-plus finish. Excellent but youthful and will need time. 90-92

Red
2000 Château Pontet-Canet France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
94 points
Nose is aromatic with tons of black fruit, nice Asian spice, not green but a little forest floor; palate is full bodied, very youthful tannins that still need more time, nice slight Asian spice; medium-long finish. Very nice but at least a decade more of age needed. 94

Red
2000 Château Léoville Poyferré France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
90 points
Youthful color without bricking; aromatic but elegant and subtle nose that requires a bit of concentration, slight minerals; palate is full bodied, youthful tannins with a bit of grip, youthful ripe black fruit; medium finish. Needs a lot of time, and I actually prefer the grand puy Lacoste today. This comes across as a bit simple. 90
Red
2000 Château Montrose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
92 points
Nose is much more red fruit than black fruit, almost red bell pepper, slight sweet vanilla; palate is full bodied, tannins are prominent but not distracting, medium-plus acid, good red fruit; medium-plus finish. Very nice and seems like it is good now or with much more age. 92

Red
2000 Vieux Château Certan France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
96 points
Nose is ridiculously aromatic, spice, incredible complexity and depth; palate is full bodied, nice blend of red and black fruit, youthful tannins; medium-plus to long finish. This is superb with an unbelievable classic pomerol nose, still fairly young on the palate. Needs more time but just wonderful now. 96+

2000 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
92 points
Very youthful ruby with minimal bricking; nice nose with elegant black fruit, a little bit of nice spice; palate is full bodied, smooth and integrated tannins with just a bit of youthfulness, medium fresh acid; medium finish. Very nice, still youthful, and I'm curious to see how this develops. Good but not exceptional today. 92-93

Red
2000 Château Lynch-Bages France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
92 points
Some black fruit, some capsicum, some earth; palate is full bodied, still youthful, high acid, medium-plus tannin, red and black fruit, fairly youthful; medium finish. Nice, but this still needs a lot of time to develop and I'm not sure where it will end up. Good, but not superb. Certainly closer to ready than most other wines at this tasting. 91-93
