Flight 1 (5 notes)

White
2009 Dehlinger Chardonnay USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
90 points
Lovely golden color; nose is highly aromatic with buttered popcorn, butterscotch, some white fruit; palate is full bodied, smooth texture, high alcohol (14.9% in a white!), medium acid, slight oily texture, much less oxidation than in my last bottle; medium finish. Overall this was markedly better than my other bottle: fresher, less oxidation, longer finish, though similar in style as a riper California chardonnay. Ready to drink now. 90
Red
2004 Dehlinger Syrah USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
88 points
Deep ruby-purple color; moderately aromatic nose with soft spice, red fruit, slight garrigue that comes out with thought and concentration; palate is medium bodied, medium acid, medium-plus alcohol that comes across as just a tad hot, medium tannins that are still a bit prominent, red fruit appears to be fading into the background; medium finish. Compared to my last bottle 2 years ago, the fruit has receded and not much has come to take its place, so that gives the structure a bit less balance. Drinkable, pairs well with food, but not one to search out. I will drink my last within the next 1-2 years. 88
With 1.5 hours air, a bit more spice and aromatic complexity, but it still has a bit excess heat on the palate. Not bad. 88-89

Red
2005 Turley Zinfandel Moore "Earthquake" Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley
90 points
Ruby with some bricking appropriate for its age; nose is aromatic, plenty of red and black fruit, spice, pepper; palate is medium bodied, smooth texture, medium tannins, medium-minus acidity, alcohol is surprisingly in check despite being quite high at 15.2%, fruit on the palate is present but starting to fade slightly; finish is medium length. This is Turley at its strength: ripe and unapologetic but with character and surprising balance. 90-91
Red
1997 Seavey Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley
92 points
Deep ruby with age-appropriate bricking; nose is aromatic with well integrated blackberry, lovely fruit, some green complexity; palate is full bodied, medium tannin slightly drying, medium acidity, very balanced medium alcohol, still plenty of black fruit remaining with old-world structure and slight green complexity; medium-plus finish. A very nice mature california cabernet with still plenty of youthfulness and freshness along with its balanced complexity. Ready now but with plenty of time, consistent with my last note in March 2016. 91-92
Red
1995 Seavey Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley
94 points
Aromatic nose with black fruit, blackberry, blackcurrant, dense and rich without being at all overripe, purity of fruit; palate is full bodied, blackberry fruit, smooth rich texture throughout, tannins are moderate and present but juicy and never drying, medium to medium-plus acidity, fresh throughout, alcohol is medium and very well balanced, black fruit throughout and persistent through the finish; medium-long finish. Superb showing tonight, in line with many of my previous bottles, and in comparison to the 1997 tonight it shows less of the old-world green but much more fruit density without any of the drying which more than makes up for it. This gets the edge for me and is drinking wonderfully now but with plenty of time ahead to last. I compared these two bottlings in March 2016 and came to the exact same conclusion. 93-94
