Introduction

A wonderful evening/night with good (wine)friends.
All wines were tasted blind and revealed after a short while.

Flight 1 (27 notes)

White
2001 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Blanc France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
93 points
Beautiful, concentrated and yet elegant bouquet with a firm dose of good oak which is well integrated already, limestone minerals and an enormous length. Beautiful and exclusive wine.
Red
2000 Arnaldo-Caprai Montefalco Sagrantino 25 Anni Italy, Umbria, Montefalco, Montefalco Sagrantino
92 points
Deep dark purple. The bouquet is a bit locked and shows bell pepper and leather. On the palate enormously concentrated, primary berry fruits, firm acidity and youthful tannin with a firm bite.
Red
1998 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Sassicaia
93 points
Beautiful and complex bouquet with luxurious oak, good and juicy fruits, beautiful acidity and powerful tannin. Still very youthful but already a treat! 93+

1996 Gaja Langhe Nebbiolo Conteisa Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC

Not so many notes… Enormously concentrated and complex with beautiful juicy fruits, herbs like thyme, good acidity and firm tannin. This wine needs another decade.

Red
1988 Château Léoville Las Cases France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
92 points
Classical and complex bouquet with cassis, vanilla, licorice and laurel. Same on the palate, firm acidity, tannin and bitterness. The wine will improve with more ageing.
Red
1985 Château Cos d'Estournel France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
92 points
Beautiful wine with creamy cassis, beautiful acidity and round tannin. Ready now and still a good future.
Red
1985 Château Cheval Blanc France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
96 points
Beautiful and complex wine with licorice, lead pencil, good fruits, acidity and tannin. A great and complex wine with still a good future.
Red
1995 Château Mouton Rothschild France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
95 points
Full bodied, loaded with cassis, lead pencil, luxurious and well dosed oak, good acidity and powerful tannin and bitterness. Still too young. Wait another decade. 95+

Red
1988 Château Lafite Rothschild France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
93 points
The bouquet is still a bit locked but there is good dark fruit and vanilla. Overall a complex wine which needs more time to show all of its finesse.
Red
1993 Château Margaux France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
92 points
The darkest of the three first growths we had. And, in this stage, also the most elegant with soft and round dark berries and vanilla. Can easily last another 5+ years.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1993 Château d'Yquem France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
94 points
A lot of apricots, orange peel and honey. Enormous concentration: one drop fills the whole mouth. A lot of sweetness and also good acidity to back it up.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1989 Oremus Tokaji Aszú 6 Puttonyos Hungary, Tokaji
93 points
Both an enormous amount of sweetness and acidity. Concentrated/caramelized apricots. Very complex as well, but d'Yquem 1993 we had before this, is more refined.
Red
2000 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée da Capo France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
96 points
A lot of everything in this wine: Loads of youthful dark and red berries, cherries, vanilla, bitterness. Good acidity and tannin. A firm amount of alcohol as well. This wine can probably last a few decades, but for this moment in 2006 the wine can use some more cellar time so everything can integrate a bit more. 96++
Red
1989 Mas de Daumas Gassac France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Vin de Pays de l'Hérault
91 points
Dark berries, laurel, anise, soft acidity, tannin and bitterness. Pleasant sweetness as well. The wine presents itself still very youthful.
Red
1995 Château Haut-Brion France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
95 points
Not many notes; enjoying the wine too much. Full bodied and powerful. Dark fruits, vanilla and graphite. Refinement. Delicious and still very youthful.

1994 Château Angélus France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

This is in fact a concentrated beauty in this off vintage. Juicy fruits, good acidity, some pleasant sweetness and soft, still sticky, powerful tannin. Good bitterness in the long finish.
Red
1994 Pétrus France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
95 points
Garnet red. Compact wine, multi layered, full bodied, red and black berries, beautifully dosed oak, beautiful balance between acidity and sweetness. Still a firm amount of powerful tannin. This wine combines finesse, complexity and power in a beautiful way. 95+
Red
1983 Château Palmer France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
95 points
Impressive; hardly any ageing in the color and the bouquet. Beautiful and feminine wine with good juice, sweet spices, good acidity, tannin and bitterness. Great length, Beautiful wine with still a great future.
