Introduction

Our regular group was joined by our friends Chris A. and Matt W. at the Capital Grille in midtown.

Flight 1 - Blind flight #1 (3 notes)

1996 Château Cos d'Estournel France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

For me this was WOTN. Must be in it's prime because all of the elements were singing. Loads of pencil lead and wild blackberries, this filled the mouth with waves of fine tannins. Very fresh. I guessed mid-nineties Pauillac and believe this is a great example of Cos carrying elements of the neighboring terrior

This was the most flamboyant wine of the tasting. Mouth filling with new world-type sweetness and roundness. Waves of fine tannins carried the rich stew of eucalyptus, vanilla, cream cheese frosting, and menthol. This benefited from a two hour decant and seems to be in the early stages of its drinking window.

Light rusty rim gave this away as the oldest wine in the flight. Yeasty barnyard for the first hour, eventually turning to sweet plums and stoney minerality. Tannins are fully resolved but the freshness is still excellent. Started to fade by the second hour.

Flight 2 - Blind flight #2 (3 notes)

Red
1999 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Tasted blind, this was my #2 and universally noted as one of the most balanced and complete wines of the tasting. I was surprised to find that it wasn't well reviewed here on CT. This bottle had ample menthol, vanilla, and cassis. A bed of dusty tannins carried the rich fruit to a deep and mouth coating finish. Hadn't lost a beat hours after opened.

Cola initally turning to figs and eucalyptus. Lifted freshness with a long persistent finish. Well into the early phase of its prime drinking window

This is still tightly wound and will gain a few points when it becomes more accessible. The ripeness of the vintage is evident in the sweet, almost new world vanilla nose. Linear and primary on the palette with coarse tannins. Try again in 6-10 years.

Flight 3 - Palette cleanser (1 note)

White - Sparkling
2006 Dom Pérignon Champagne France, Champagne

Flamboyant and almost slutty champagne comes across as both sweet and powerfully austere at the same time. Fine mousse expands in the mouth, filling every corner. This was served after six reds and cut through beautifully.

2005 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie Château d'Ampuis France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

I was baffled by this wine at first as it seemed flabby and tired. An hour later is was singing. Touch of black pepper, vanilla bean, dried plums and pure cassis. It has an intense freshness leading to a long, lifted finish

Menthol, chewing tobacco, and plums on the nose. This was elegant and somewhat smaller-scaled than other wines at the table.
