Flight 1 (12 notes)

Red
2012 La Ca' Növa Barbaresco Vigna Bric Mentina Montefico Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Starter wine; see through crimson, pale rim with orange hues; young and fresh on the nose, rose petals, elegant, floral, wild strawberry, soft red strawberry, slight orange, fresh; more linear on the palate, slight bitter note in back, softer fruit, firm acid but not really hard tannins, mineral, some age, not the friendliest; thought this was an earlier developer like an '09 Perbacco.

Red
1995 Château du Trignon Gigondas France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas
Nose is slightly muddy, bitter, leather, dusty clay, brick dust, less olive; better on the palate, lighter to medium body, sort of a natural wine finish, grains, rye bread, slight chocolate powder; ok, holding on but not a great example.
Red
2010 Clos de l'Oratoire France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Black core with garnet rim; coffee, some blue fruit, espresso, good bit of oak, chocolate, balm, structured but modern, cherry, black currant, creamy, mocha, young, integrating but needs more time; I like the stuffing, was in St. Emilion.

Red
2006 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Le Serre Nuove Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri
Dark chocolate core with reddish violet rim; raisin, prune, nutty, black fruit, mineral, sun baked fruit; good grip, black fruit, good character, sweet ripe and raisiny; nobody on this one, off bottle I think.
Red
2000 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Very dark opaque core with garnet rim; reminds me of the Clos de l'Oratoire but Left Bank, coffee, new oak, peaty, green pepper, chocolate, vanilla, wet earth; very nice texture, big and plump, softer tannin, polished, easy; soft and yummy; thought this could have been Clerc Milon or Pichon Baron from the '09/'10 vintages, a bit off on vintage but this shows how well this should age, still quite young but drinkability is impressive; my WOTN.

Red
2006 Domaine Auguste Clape Cornas France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
Black core with larger maroon rim, throwing some fine sediment; have to search a bit for the nose but there is black olive, violets, deep, aged, tar, white pepper, great texture, hard to get any granite, good acid; tasty.
Red
2008 Montevetrano Montevetrano Colli di Salerno IGT Italy, Campania, Colli di Salerno IGT
Dark core with reddish violet rim; reduced, chocolate covered cherry, ripe, dark fruit, slight nutty VA; grainy tannin, darker Sangio?, brooding a little bit, nutty, fresh acid; called '07 Argiano BdM.

Red
2010 Cantine del Notaio Aglianico del Vulture La Firma Italy, Basilicata, Aglianico del Vulture
Very dark core with duller crimson rim; dark fruit, concrete, almost grapey, prune, red and black raspberry; Grenache-like fruit, grippy tannin, pithy, bitter (Grenache) note, darker fruit, mineral, volcanic, nice fruit; still may need a bit more time for fruit and tannin to settle; called Sicily even though reminiscent of Grenache, volcanic note didn't make sense, everyone else in CdP.
Red
2003 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon The Montelena Estate USA, California, Napa Valley, Calistoga
Black core with dull maroon rim; some age, brown sugar, dark fruit, almost stewed, tobacco, some grip, very tannic, raw meat, currants; called '97 Cali Cab; a bit disjointed at this stage, if well stored I'd suggest waiting another 5 years.

Red
2001 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select USA, California, Napa Valley, Stags Leap District
Black core with reddish violet rim; new oak, sweet fruit, the creamiest thus far this evening, chocolate, tobacco, vanilla; grainy tannin, dark fruit, leather, smoke, black currant, plum; tough showing in the context of this evening.

Red
2011 Felton Road Pinot Noir Bannockburn New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Bannockburn
Cloudy maroon, dull rim; red fruit, complex nose, some sulfur, sour cherry, slight animal; tar and taut on the palate, smoky red cherry, slight medicinal, musky cherry, plush, sappy fruit and texture, cranberry and sour cherry, higher alcohol and some sweet fruit; everyone thought this was Burgundy; showing some age, not sure if this will improve so I would drink sooner.
Red
2011 Tenute Cisa Asinari dei Marchesi di Grésy Barbaresco Martinenga Gaiun Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Crimson core showing good clarity, orange in rim; roses, candied cherry, pretty, wild strawberry; grippy palate, mineral, oak tannin, Robitussin, lighter more elegant; sexier than most Gaiuns but needs more time.
