A few 2011 Turley Zins

Introduction

A mini-horizontal of 2011 Turley SVD Zinfandel bottlings. I cut my teeth on Cali Zin with Turley about 7 or 8 years ago but I started to tire of the style (and the ridiculous bottle shape that doesn't fit in many racks) and dropped off the list.

Flight 1 (3 notes)

Red
2011 Turley Zinfandel Pesenti Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles

Tasted with the 2011 Ueberroth and 2011 Salvador zins.
Very ripe, pruney, raisined, jammy, with some tart acidity and some oak char. Very rich, sweet, heavy, and ponderous. Very much in the "over the top" category for my palate. This is a good example of the style that made Turley famous. I used to like this style, but I guess my palate has changed quite a bit towards AFWE because I don't find it very enjoyable anymore. This has more in common with Compari than dry red wine.

Pretty similar to the 2011 Pesenti, i.e. over-the-top, overripe, liqueur-like, heavy sweet zin. This had a little less oak char and was a little less tart. Not a style I enjoy very much.

Enjoyed this a little more than the two Paso zins. Ripe and rich Turley-style zin but a little more toned down than those two, not showing as much pruney-ness. Some nice flavors but lacking acidic and tannic structure and zin spice - seemed a little soft and flat.

Closing

Turley makes some Zins that I have enjoyed in recent years, but these three were all uber-ripe, heavy, and over-the-top to my palate, especially the two from Paso. I consider these as cocktail drinks more than dry red wine. They have their fans, though, as can be attested to by the other notes which are almost universally praising these wines. Different strokes...
