Flight 1 - Whites (6 notes)

White
2004 Domaine des Baumard Savennières France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Savennières
Lightest color in this flight. Stinky nose, this wine seems just clobbered with sulfur. Light citric fruit, good acidity, mineral, dry. I guessed Loire Muscadet. Was told later that the sulfur blew off after an hour or two. (Tasted blind)
White - Off-dry
1994 Wegeler Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Lactic/buttery, diesel nose. Honeyed citric/apricot fruit, probably saw some botrytis, moderately sweet, with good if not great acidity. Clearly German riesling, probably a warmer vintage. Very tasty though i'd prefer more acid. I guessed Mosel riesling, spatlese level. (Tasted blind)
White
2005 Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris France, Alsace
Slight chemical aroma that i get in a lot of Alsace PG & PB. Buckets of sweet apple syrup on the palate with some stone fruit and moderate acidity. Super unctuous mouthfeel with considerable sweetness. I guessed Alsace but was hemming and hawing between Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc. (Tasted blind)
White
1998 Kistler Chardonnay McCrea Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Mountain
Aromas of superripe, nearly rotting buttery peaches dipped in syrup, though the wine is nearly dry. Loads of oak. Opulent, slippery mouthfeel, almost greasy with walnut or hazelnut oil. I was lost and guessed this was some freakshow of a California viognier. For me it was DNPIM. (Tasted blind)
White
1999 Arcadian Chardonnay Bien Nacido Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Maria Valley
Rich opulent aroma of sweet freshly churned butter. Lemony, almost prickly acidity inlaid with expensive tasting oak. The palate is refreshingly more finessed than the nose suggests, and the wine is either dry or very nearly so. A well made wine if not one i love. I guessed Meursault from a moderately warm vintage. (Tasted blind)
White
2004 Kahurangi Riesling Old Vines Moutere New Zealand, South Island, Nelson, Moutere
89 points
Screwcap. Neutral color. Zingy, citric nose with mineral and light petrol. Reminds me of the powder in the middle of Zotz candy. Vibrant acidity, very light RS, pleasant grapefruit/citrus. Very light and fresh, yum. I brought this. PS: From past experience i knew this wine to be rather reductive (smells strongly of rubber tire on opening), so i double-decanted in the morning and popped it back in the refrigerator for the rest of the day. Thumbs up.

Flight 2 - Reds (4 notes)

Red
2005 Roessler Pinot Noir Hein Family Vineyard USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley
Cranberry, grape, a little herbal. Crunchy darker briar fruits in the mouth, light bodied, rather sweet. Very, very soft tannins. Reminds me a little of gamay. With time in the glass the aromas turn superripe and the sweetness is even more pronounced - ugh. This is probably California pinot noir, and i do like the fresh style. But i find it lacking for structure and there is way too much residual sugar in here. I just can't take it seriously, let alone drink the stuff. (Tasted blind)
Red
2005 Domaine de la Chanteleuserie Bourgueil France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Bourgueil
Green nose, stemmy. Spicy dark fruits and tobacco on the palate. Loire Cab Franc seems an obvious bet here but the fruit seems rather dark compared to (say) a good Chinon and it's lacking some depth. Dry with plenty of tannin, but definitely approachable. Tasted blind.
Red
2001 Edmunds St. John Syrah Wylie-Fenaughty USA, California, Sierra Foothills, El Dorado County
flawed
Rather unpleasant nose exhibiting volatile acidity and the aroma of rotting vegetables. With time this attenuates slightly -- but not enough -- and adds green olives and mint. Soft, sweet dark fruits on the palate with medium acidity and an unpleasant off-flavor. Ugh, what's going on here? I brought this.
Red
2005 Anwilka South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch
Smokey nose with cigar butt, plenty of sweet dark fruits , spice. More dark fruits, spice on the palate with some black pepper and charming vegetal notes. Moderately structured, with chewy tannins and an interesting finish akin to mentholated cherries. A nice wine with good balance and some old world aromatic nuances but new world levels of sweet, juicy fruit. I correctly guessed syrah but missed that this was a blend with cab. That cigar butt should have been a dead giveaway... (Tasted blind)
