Flight 1 (3 notes)

White
2012 Peter Michael Chardonnay Belle Côte USA, California, Sonoma County, Knights Valley
flawed
Something was off with this bottle, it was very close to being what you would expect but there was a background corked like component so I don't think it's fair to judge.
White
2009 Aubert Chardonnay Ritchie Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
93 points
Still drinking well, lemon, yellow apple, lichee, pear, great balance and a nose that you keep going back to. Very good!

White
2013 Aubert Chardonnay UV-SL Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
91 points
Loads of intense citrus/mineralogy, some butter cream, high acidity and alcohol. This was hard to drink young with the intense heat, and still a little off balance. Much better examples of Aubert out there.

Flight 2 (3 notes)

Red
2013 Betz Family Syrah La Côte Patriarche USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Yakima Valley
92 points
Dark red and black fruits, white pepper, violets, clove, a touch of vanilla, good overall, but not quite up to par with the WA score. Still it's a good wine with some life ahead of it.

Red
2011 Delas Frères Hermitage Les Bessards France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
93 points
I liked this more than most at the table, sour cherry, cranberry, rhubarb, a touch of green, strong saline character, it's definitely cool climate and although drinks well as a PnP, it should have a good 5-10 years of developing left on it. Good but not great.

Red
2009 Sheridan Vineyard Syrah Singularity USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Yakima Valley
92 points
Sweet red fruits, loads of cooking spices, chewy tannins, nice mouthfeel. A good mix of new and old world, nearly the end of it's best drinking window IMO.

Flight 3 (4 notes)

Red
2012 Lillian Winery Syrah USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County
93 points
Dark red and black fruits, ham, cinnamon, clove, good balance, similar profile to other Lillian’s.

Similar to previous notes, great value and similar profile to more expensive albans.

Red
2013 Jaffurs Syrah Upslope USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County
93 points
Similar to previous notes on this wine, a wine I'll be keeping my eye on for future bottling.
Red
2013 Herman Story Syrah Bien Nacido USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Maria Valley
95 points
Dark sweet red fruit, blackberry, cinnamon, asphalt, licorice, toasted oak, great intensity, purity and balance. Drinking well right now as a PnP.

Flight 4 (4 notes)

Red
2013 Saxum Heart Stone Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
93 points
Classic Saxum, great sweet red fruit, roasted meats, salty mineralty and cooking spices with perfect balance.
Red
2011 Next of Kyn No~5 Cumulus Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast
94 points
Always fun to have this wine, although it's definitely a rare treat. Ripe cherry, raspberry, pomegranate, sweet baking spices, great intensity, although overall it lacks the complexity from better vintages. Very good.
Red
2015 Booker Vineyard Vertigo USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
95 points
One of the better wines in the lineup this night, dark red and black fruits, Saxum-like baking spices with great intensity and balance. This was excellent and it beat out a Saxum in the same lineup.

Red
2015 Domaine Courbis Cornas Les Eygats France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
93 points
Tasted blind, I did not pick up on this being a Cornas, red fruit, almost a milk chocolate character mixed in with a limestone like minerality. Good balance and very good wine overall. I really don't see how JD who I usually agree with gave this 100.

Flight 5 (4 notes)

Red
2012 Westerhold Family Vineyards Syrah Westerhold Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Bennett Valley
93 points
Dark red fruits, cooking spices, pepper, great intensity and balance. Crazy good quality.
Red
2013 Carlisle Syrah Sonoma County USA, California, Sonoma County
93 points
One of the surprise of the nights for many, the appellation Carlisle Syrah bested many wines with much high price tags (double blind). Great ripe fruit, spices, pepper, and terrific balance. Very good and one hell of a QPR.

Red
2014 Bedrock Wine Co. Syrah Weill a Way Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley
93 points
Similar to previous notes of mine, it's a step down from the previous two years, but still glad they are making some of this wonderful juice.

Red
2015 Rubus Shiraz Barossa Australia, South Australia, Barossa
89 points
Really bi-polar wine from the double blind comparison, I wasn't a huge fan due to the cheap oak finish, but others rated this wine extremely high and it was the cheapest wine in our competition. Overall it's definitely worth the cost and a bit of a surprise in a good way.
