Introduction

The 2017 reds are looking seriously good already. The hype is starting to build.

Flight 1 (9 notes)

White
2017 Tyrrell's Sémillon Vat 1 Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley
91 points
Rewarding early. This is showing some nice fruit already, but it’s the overall structure that excites me. Doing its thing effortlessly. Time will reward patience.
White
2017 Tyrrell's Chardonnay Vat 47 Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley
92 points
I love the 47 more and more every passing vintage. It kicks off with a solid dose of lime and finishes with toasty notes building in the background. The balance is impeccable. Need to stock up.

Red
2017 Tyrrell's Shiraz Single Vineyard Mother's Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley, Pokolbin
90 points
This is a very solid wine for a first ever release. From a block replanted in 2010 with cuttings from 4 Acres, Old Hut and Johnno’s. Medium bodied, bright red berries, minimal oak. Very nice and even better QPR. One to watch.
Red
2017 Tyrrell's Shiraz Old Hut Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley
91 points
Another of the relatively new single vineyard wines. I think this is the third or fourth release from this vineyard? More density and darker fruit alongside the Mother’s. Also in very good QPR range at $30 p/ bottle. My pick of the single vineyard range.

Red
2011 Tyrrell's Shiraz Special Release Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley
90 points
One of (maybe the?) first releases from the Old Hut site but under a non-descript “special release” label. Was good to see it next to the ’17 Old Hut. Purple and red fruit profile, fine tannin make it elegant drinking. Good staying potential.

Red
2017 Tyrrell's Shiraz Single Vineyard NVC Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley
90 points
The historic source of the discontinued Vat 5. Original plantings were from 1921 and in time it will become a future sacred site, I’m told. Very similar profile to the Old Hut, which shaded the NVC today.
Red
2017 Tyrrell's Pinot Noir Vat 6 Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley
89 points
Tasted blind you’d never pick it as Hunter pinot. Red cherries and some tart strawberry notes. A surprise packet. Very nice.
Red
2017 Tyrrell's Vat 8 Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley
94 points
As is the case in very good vintages, all of the fruit is sourced locally for this Vat 8. Only in the bottle for a few weeks and is already showing extremely well. Great blend of two classic bedfellows. Serious length. My favourite of the Tyrrell's bracket today.

2017 Tyrrell's Shiraz Vat 9 Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley
93 points
Although it’s early to call, 2017 has turned out to be an exceptional year, and many are saying it will rival 2014. This goes a fair way in making that point. The colour is a fantastic purple and the nose is the standout for me. I’m stocking up ahead of the mad rush which is guaranteed to ensue.
