Nuits St.-Georges
Tasted July 3, 2018 by Burgundy Al with 287 views
Introduction
Tasting at the impressive new cuverie with Erwan Faiveley, immediately after a torrential rainstorm with minor hail as we were driving along RN74.
Flight 1 (16 notes)
Red
2017 Faiveley Volnay 1er Cru Les Fremiets
Barrel tasting at Faiveley. Red berries and cherries on nose coming across as bright and vibrant. Similar flavors, just less exciting. Good depth, good for its level.
Red
2017 Faiveley Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Damodes
Barrel tasting at Faiveley. Slightly reduced now. Black and red cherry, on the brawny side from start-to-finish, with savory spice peeking through on finish.
Red
2017 Faiveley Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Saint Georges
Barrel tasting at Faiveley. Also slightly reductive to start. Starts and finished rather elegant for young LSG, with a more expected firmness in the middle. Very good length. This domaine wine will be blended with purchased grapes into a larger single cuvee (starting with 2016 vintage).
Red
2017 Faiveley Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos des Issarts
Barrel tasting at Faiveley. Charming black fruit comes across as nicely approachable already. Soft and forward with good+ density. Often a favorite, lesser known wine, I like the 2017 vintage here, 89-91 point potential.
Red
2017 Faiveley Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers
Barrel tasting at Faiveley. Also nicely balanced and approachable already, with rich black fruit and subtle spice. Good+ density and length. 90-92 point potential.
Red
2017 Faiveley Echezeaux En Orveaux
Barrel tasting at Faiveley. Bright red fruit with good spice and weight, even if not yet showing Grand Cru density to me. 89-91 point potential.
Red
2017 Faiveley Charmes-Chambertin
Barrel tasting at Faiveley. black fruit throughout with meaty character and very good density and hints of complexity already. Very good potential. This will also be blended with purchased grapes into a large cuvee of Charmes-Chambertin, starting with the 2016 vintage.
Red
2017 Faiveley Latricières-Chambertin
Barrel tasting at Faiveley. All black fruit with very good depth coming through on nose and palate. Forward fruit to start, spice and elegant tannins emerge in the middle, followed by an elegant, minerally finish. Charming already, 92-94 point potential.
Red
2017 Faiveley Chambertin-Clos de Bèze
Barrel tasting at Faiveley. Similar to Latricieres, just bigger and slighter sweeter. Very long length with an expanding finish. 92-95 point potential.
Red
2017 Faiveley Mazis-Chambertin
Barrel tasting at Faiveley. Incredibly bright and vibrant black fruit start. Gets bigger, bigger and bigger, and slightly richer towards middle and finish. Very meaty, very classically Gevrey. Very good potential.
Red
2017 Faiveley Corton-Clos des Cortons Faiveley
Barrel tasting at Faiveley. Slightly sweet red and black cherry with very good density and balance already. Surprisingly approachable, with good complexity, perhaps not at the level this wine shows in its best vintages. 91-93 point potential.
White
2017 Faiveley Meursault 1er Cru Blagny
Barrel tasting at Faiveley. Fun and fleshy with broad, mouth-filling textures. Good for its level.
White
2017 Faiveley Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Champs-Gain
Barrel tasting at Faiveley. Ripe and forward start with plenty of orchard fruit, then leaner and brighter middle through minerally finish. 90-92 point potential.
White
2017 Faiveley Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet
Barrel tasting at Faiveley. Apple, pear and some lemon with an expanding, highly engaging finish. Very good 92-95 point potential.

White
2017 Faiveley Bâtard-Montrachet
Barrel tasting at Faiveley. Richer, fatter than the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, but with the textural vibrancy to be more exciting as well. 93-95 point potential.
White
2017 Faiveley Corton-Charlemagne
Barrel tasting at faiveley. Dense and powerful orchard and stone fruit, almost unctuous. Very good weight, good length. So much here, but it seems compact and backward right now. I would be very interested in re-visiting this wine a year from now to assess how it has come together, but think it has very good+ cellarworthy potential.
