Introduction

Luis was generous enough to open several of his precious Napa cabs for us.

Flight 1 (1 note)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Philippe PriƩ Champagne Tradition Brut France, Champagne
89 points
This is an elegant if slightly simple Champagne. This was better than previous bottle, although that is probably because the previous bottle followed a 2006 Roederer L'Ermitage.

Flight 2 (11 notes)

Red
2005 Karl Lawrence Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
90 points
Slow O'd 3 hours. This was smooth and complex. There is a nice blueberry component. However, it is slightly alcoholic. Others at the tasting liked this more than me, and modern Napa cab fans would likely score it higher.
Red
2005 Karl Lawrence Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Herb Lamb USA, California, Napa Valley
88 points
Slow O'd 3 hours. The nose is pleasant but the palate is big, heavy and has a lot of anise. My initial impression was 89 but eventually settled on 88.
Red
2007 Karl Lawrence Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley
89 points
2 hour decant. This wine is high alcohol, with tar and tobaco. To me, it is a Napa cab cocktail wine, although obviously enjoyable.
Red
2007 Rivers-Marie Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley
91 points
2 hour decant. The overall profile is a typical TRB cabernet that has pleasant characteristics of modern Napa. I enjoyed this more than I thought I would.

2008 Rivers-Marie Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley

2 hour decant, and consumed a pour after drinking 2007 Rivers Marie cab. This was slightly darker and brooding, with more black fruit. It still had a lot of the characteristics of TRB and modern Napa.
Red
2008 Rudius Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley
90 points
A 3 hour decant (not my choice all you commenters!). The nose is intriguing, but there is definitely some alcohol there. THe palate is thin from a flavor perspective and also alcoholic. Overall, this is on the dark side of cabernet, and I suspect this may have been overdecanted. As a pop and pour 2 years ago, it was much more enjoyable.

Red
2008 Myriad Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Georges III Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford
92 points
A 3 hour decant. I was rather perplexed that I enjoyed this bottle (not my favorite producer), but I see I've given similar scores to this exact bottle twice before, so at least I'm consistent. This wine is smooth, and compared to almost every other wine tonight, was not alcoholic. This is tangy spice, resolved fruit.
Red
2008 Myriad Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford
88 points
Decanted 4 hours (not my choice commenters!), this is in-you-face Napa on the nose, and then the palate is quite hollow. I would think that a) these don't age that well and b) this wine was over-decanted.
Red
2012 Quivet Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley USA, California, Napa Valley
88 points
Decanted 5 hours (not my choice commenters!), the oak is very pronounced and there is alot of vanilla. This wine is more of a berry liqueur to me.
Red
2011 Myriad Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley USA, California, Napa Valley
92 points
Decanted 5+ hours (not my choice commenters), there is vibrant red fruit and a touch of bell pepper. This is more my speed, almost balanced with some moderate complexity. 2011 Napa has been my friend so far.
Red
2013 Chappellet Las Piedras USA, California, Napa Valley
92 points
Decanted 6 or more hours. This was in the zone. Just balanced, lovely plush fruit, and so many different fruity flavors that are zippy and fresh.

Flight 3 - Bonus bottle - not included in tasting (1 note)

Red
2012 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection USA, California, Napa Valley
94 points
Pop and pour and served at 50F or less, which to me is perfect for this wine. Rich and extremely smooth. This is like drinking cold dark chocolate with some fruity port thrown in. I feel like an angel dies every time I drink one of these, for this is a blasphemous wine. But it tastes so good. Thanks(?) Jason for opening.
