Introduction

An opportunity to look at a selection of Malbecs from Cahors, Mendoza and Australia…

Flight 1 (13 notes)

Red
2015 Bodega Catena Zapata Malbec Catena High Mountain Vines Argentina, Mendoza
Rich sweetly plummy, sweet spice, rich, chocolate, vanilla, slight coffee. Softly tannic, big fruit and oak, juicy though, typical for what I expect from an Argentinian Malbec which holds no judgement on my behalf…
Red
2017 Marcelo Pelleriti Malbec Argentina, Mendoza
Red plum and jubey cherry; semi cab mac, sweet spice, slightly gamey. A little bitter and sour on the palate, silky tannins, front of mouth grip. Meh
Red
2017 Alamos Malbec Argentina, Mendoza
sweet black plum over cherry, confected, sweet spice, peppery spice, and slightly butter on the tannins on the palate. Lacks fruit. Meh.
Red
2015 Domaine Octavie Touraine France, Loire Valley, Touraine
Gamey, earthy, funky, a little acetone, red berry over plum. Sour, drying tannins, a little bitter. Nah.
Red
2015 Pulenta Estate Malbec I Argentina, Mendoza, Lujan de Cuyo, Agrelo
Ripe berry and plu. Slightly leather notes, a certain briny quality. Earth. Interesting nose. In the mouth it's juicy and savoury, tightly tannic with muted fruit. Hmm.

Red
2014 Mi Terruño Malbec Reserva Argentina, Mendoza
Chocolate and vanilla over ripe plum and jammy berry, cream and so it proves on the palate. Tannins are slightly drying. Well made. BBQ Fodder with mates who aren't into posh wine but are willing to try something other than Barossa Shiraz.
Red
2015 Bleasdale Malbec Generations Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, Langhorne Creek
similar ripe fruit profile to the previous wine but the fruit is more savoury and the oaky more spiced that vanilla/chocolate. A little earthiness and the fruit is exceedingly savoury and meaty on the palate. Drying, grippy tannins. Bit meh for me.
Red
2014 Jed Wines Malbec Limited Release Argentina, Mendoza, Valle de Uco
Funky farmyards, sweaty saddle, very gamey over muted red plums and spice. On the palate it's softly and densely tannic; smoothly textured and, though still red hued, the fruit is ripe. Okay.
Red
2015 Clos Troteligotte Malbec K-or France, Southwest France, Cahors
Jubey red and black plums and cherry, sweet spice, very clean fruit. More of the same on the palate, juicy, fresh, drying tannins are talc textured and close down the gums though the fruit persists on the palate. Rather nice and completely not like any Malbec I've ever tasted - very Burgundian - I suspect a lot of whole berry...
Red
2013 Familia Cassone Malbec Obra Prima Reserva Argentina, Mendoza, Lujan de Cuyo
Savoury, meaty, slightly funky, densely ripe and concentrated black hued fruit; berries and plums, a little dusty cocoa powder. Off-dry on the palate with over ripe fruit tending to prunes and raisins backed with rather bitter tannins.
Red
2012 Domingo Molina Malbec Argentina, Valles Calchaquíes, Salta, Cafayate
flawed
Hugely corked. FLAW
Red
2015 Mendel Malbec Argentina, Mendoza
flawed
Wowser…a completely anonymous wine. Doesn’t really taste or smell of anything, even with major agitation. I can't believe it's meant to be like this so I'm going to have to go with FLAW.

Red
2007 Bodega El Porvenir de Cafayate Malbec Laborum Argentina, Valles Calchaquíes, Salta, Cafayate
Rich, ripe plums and black cherry - very much densely dark hued fruit, a little earth, cream, vanilla and chocolate. More of the same on the palate, big, bolshy, warming, softly tannic and well balanced. A more posh BBQ wine than that Mi Terruno. For the same mates but only if they are willing to chip in a bit more cash at $84 AUD for this drop...

Closing

Everything I expected here - the Argentinians were ripe and mostly American, or heavily, oaked, the Australian was the same but with muted French oak and those from France a little coarser and rougher. Of course the Jed was quite French and the Clos Troteligotte was the most interesting/untypical - very Burgundian so that shattered my vinous cliches a little, which was nice.
